Hello there, Americans!

I don't know if it's custom to introduce oneself as a new user of this forum, but I thought I'd say hello anyway.

Right then, I am, as anyone visiting my marvellous weblog will find out in no time, not American, but Norwegian. I've followed DU's fantastic Top 10 Conservative Idiots for well over a year. Then, I found out it would be fun to hook up on this forum, being as I am concerned about what goes on across the pond.

We get only the headlines of how Bush's fascist state is evolving over here, and the average Norwegian is as concerned about it as you lot must be. But since the Norwegian government is the lapdog of the U.S. in the NATO and everywhere else, criticism on an official level is practically non-existent.

For the record I'm 27 years old and I live in Oslo (our capital) with my gorgeous wife. Like all Norwegians I have relatives living in the States too (Sacramento & San Francisco for my part). I'm a moderate socialist, more or less, and am about to have a baby (well, the wife is) at the end of March. Apart from that I'm a pleasant enough bloke, I suppose. Hope we'll all get along ;)

My wife is half Norweigan, her family came to the US 2 generations ago...you don't have relatives in Frankfort, Michigan, do you?

Oh, I looked at the SV http://www.sv.no/hvem/english/ site and read their platform, it was an interesting take on local government (Municipalities). I'm an urban planner and it's nice to see people actually taking an interest in how they actually live their lives and the environment in which they do it. An beside being a registered Democrat I'm also involved with the SP-USA http://sp-usa.org/ so it looks like we've got something in common! I'm married too but a smidgen older than you, I'm 35.

Anyway, welcome to DU!

They're a good party, SV, and the second-biggest in Norway. Oslo is a city very divided between those living in the west and north of the city (=rich, always votes conservative) and those in the south and east (=working class, votes labour, socialist and an alarmingly high rates for the extreme-right racist Progress Party, as well).

Personally I've always lived in the east, and as I am equipped with a brain, SV is my party. Concerning the environment, SV's policies are very good, but also very necessary. Oslo has more traffic and traffic pollution pro capita than Tokyo! Unfortunately with the bloody conservatives winning the local election three weeks ago, that's not going to change much for the next four years. They are a 100% party for the car drivers, and are doing their best to wreck our public transport system.

Norwegian politics are centered around the christian democrats and the Liberal Party (called "Venstre". Pretends to be liberal, but are dead conservative in practice), with few deviations from the straight and narrow. At the moment we have a centre-right government; my hope is that SV continues to grow over the next two years (currently they're on something like a 14 per cent popularity rating) to be able to get into government with the Labour party (a party with all the principles of a common slut...).

I don't know too much about the SP-USA, but I'll get myself informed! As I've said so many times since joining this board; it's good to see that there are so many sensible people in the States, and not just knuckle-dragging Republican morons.
