Guess what? I HATE HOMOPHOBES.
Yep. Hate them. And I'm not apologizing for it. Nope. I don't care WHAT anyone thinks about me HATING THE SHIT out of homophobes, I do. No one and nothing can stop me.

I went to my first night of class last night. It's a graduate level statistics class.

The guy sitting behind me was laughing and whispering under his breath, to the girl sitting next to him (who was mostly ignoring him) TOTALLY homo-hateful comments about the professor.

:grr: :grr:

Ask me how much I wanted to turn around and deck the SHIT out of that guy. Ask me.

THIS MUCH!!!!! I actually started fantasizing about bloodying his nose. See what this has driven me to?

So finally we got a 10 minute break. I was on this guy's ASS all the way out of the room. I didn't want the professor to hear. Followed him to the coke machines, where I got up in his face (which was a little difficult as he seemed to be about 6'3" and I'm 5'7") and started chewing him out.

I was actually shaking all over, I was so angry. I told him:

A) I AM NOT OBSESSED, LIKE HE APPARENTLY IS, WITH ANOTHER ADULT'S SEXUALITY (I was being rather loud, by the way, and he was looking around uncomfortably--I was vaguely aware of people gathering around).

B) I DON'T CARE TO HEAR HIS HATEFUL SHIT WHILE I AM TRYING TO LISTEN TO THE PROFESSOR--I PAID ALMOST $900 DOLLARS FOR THIS CLASS AND I AM GOING TO HEAR EVERY FUCKING WORD HE SAYS, SO SHUT THE HELL UP.

Then I told him, really calmly this time, that if he didn't stop, immediately, I would let the university know about his comments in that class. Told him I'd tape record him next time.

He was ASHEN. They really don't expect to get called out on it, do they?

Well, get this: the little group of women who had gathered around, mostly from my class, broke out in applause.

God, it was all very surreal. I just happened to be in a REALLY bad mood when I got to class anyway (almost got lost getting there and was almost late and even lost a SHOE I was running so fast to get there--I went back to get it, obviously). I have a feeling if I had been in a really good mood, I wouldn't have given it to him quite so badly. I still would have said something.

He sputtered and dashed off to the men's room. When I came back to class he had moved to the far opposite corner of the room. Good riddance.

The girl who had been sitting next to him came up to me and said if I hadn't said anything, she was going to.

By the way, my professor is great. He gave a fucking WHEELBARROW of homework on the first night (dear God, four articles, five chapters, three sets of questions, research on a database, abstracts, and figure out your research topic by next WEEK???), but I still think he is great.

Homophobes everywhere: consider yourself on NOTICE. I will not tolerate your shit.

I used to do that. You know who got me to stop? Neocons, the religious right, bush et al.

I do the same thing if I hear racist comments. I do NOT let them stand. I used to bite my tongue, in the interest of "harmony."

Screw that. Silence implies assent.

27. Numbers-wise, they are a minority
I meant that in the sense of sociology they are not a minority group. They tend to be far more outspoken these days than people like you or I.

Why is it that people that hate seem so more prevalent than those with compassion?

Anyway, I say it again, you rule for doing what you did.

Which especially makes sense when you consider that EVERYONE, pretty much, with a few exceptions, has bisexual tendencies...although for most it never goes much beyond the occasional random fantasy. These guys have those thoughts, it goes against everything they think "being a MAN" is supposed to be about, so they lash out at something they hate in themselves.

while we're confessing, my husband also tried it out, long before he met me. (Um, he was in the Army.....um, and so was the other guy....ANYway.)

His reaction was "eh, it was ok." He shrugged. Said he knew he preferred women more.

I did not ever act on mine. Don't really regret it, but I don't deny it, either.

And I'm going out of town today for a three day conference and won't be back until late Sunday. Next class is Wednesday.

Guess who's taking her books with her to the conference?

;-)

Are you a professor? Is that normal for a graduate level class? I mean, I remember a lot of reading on the undergrad level, but nothing like this, and certainly not on the first night of class.....

33. It Depends On The Class
I had the ups and downs in all my graduate school days. (Three advanced degrees, so i know the ropes.)

The things i teach are math heavy. So, the volume tends to be less but the time is probably high. There's isn't a huge volume of reading in any of the things i do (all grad level stuff at three different universities), but the excercises and problems are probably a burden for some folks, especially part-time students with full-time jobs.

The most reading i ever had to do was in the law classes for the MBA. The rest of those classes were a breeze. (I have an advanced degree in statistical mechanics, and they wouldn't let me test out of the busienss statistics class. So, i never went to class except to take the final and mid-term. Stupid policy.)

But, the law classes did require extensive reading. Probably 14 or 15 hours per week, and i read pretty darned fast.

I am much more interested in my students absorbing the concepts and thinking for themselves. So, i avoid rote work. Grad students don't learn that much from repetition. They learn by thinking. I guess it depends on the subject matter.

One person can make a difference. We have these commercials running in our area right now that tell people to help fight bigotry. You should be on one of those commercials.

I have an acquaintance who is somewhat homophobic. I told him about it one day. I said that I didn't have a problem with gay people. That I used to have a friend who was gay. He stopped using the derogative terms that he had been using around me. I hope it made him reconsider his views.

28. No WONDER we get along so well!
Love you, sweetie! :-)

I did this once to a complete stranger at a friend's apartment who was complaining about "niggers" on Saturday Night Live.

Everyone in the apartment who knew me was mortified, cuz I didn't know this guy from Adam, but I couldn't have lived with myself if I hadn't said anything.

I think it helped cause the breakup of my friendship with my old college roommate. She bitched about it in the car all the way home-- that I didn't know these people, I should have just shut up, blah blah blah. I told her "Sorry, but I won't shut up for you. That was wrong."

I'd do the same for my gay friends or any other friends who were being verbally abused, whether they knew about it or not.

Yay Bouncy! :D

39. Oh! good place to tell this story:
In September 2003, my husband and I went to Iowa to canvass for Dean.

Well, we were paired up with other Dean supporters from Texas, given maps, lists, literature and shit and dropped off in different neighborhoods in Davenport.

The two guys we were with were partners in life.

This truck comes barreling down the street, sees our Dean shirts, and yells out: "HEY! DEAN'S A FAGGOT AND SO ARE YOU!!!"

He drives on. Then he comes back around the block and drives really slowly next to us, just looking at us and smiling this shit-eating grin. I have to admit, I was a bit scared.

Then one of the guys we were with yelled out "Hey we're from Texas!" The guy said "SO?" And he yelled "EVEN THE FAGGOTS HAVE GUNS IN TEXAS!!!"

LMAO! The guy drove off, never came back.

Then (and please I hope no one gets offended by this, he was just being funny), his partner turned to us and said, totally deadpan "Probably a Clark supporter."

Oh I thought I was going to wet my pants. We all high-fived.

*I* felt butchy next to my professor, if that gives you any indication.

But it really wasn't what I was concerned about. I was concerned about:

1. Is he going to be mean?

2. Is he going to be indifferent? (Almost worse than mean.)

3. Is this class going to be super hard?

That's all I wanted to know! LOL!

I'm glad there were others around who were on your side. I was at a wedding once (a coworker of my husband, who used to be an accountant) where we were seated at a table with a bunch of the groom's friends. We didn't know anyone. Well all the groom's friends started making homophobic comments and I was getting so mad. No matter what subject came up they had to turn it around. "Did you see the movie XYZ?" "That movie is totally gay!""Does anyone want some more wine? "White wine is for fags!"

Finally one of them said to me "You're pretty quiet." and I replied "Well, I'm kinda tired from doing the AIDS Walk yesterday and I also find the conversation really offensive."

Total silence. But I don't care.

They're bigots. That's all they are. Actually that's not all they are. They're bigots who hide behind religion. Just like the apartheid crew in S. Africa used to hide behind their "covenant with the Lord". On the evolutionary scale, that places them somewhere between the amoeba and the Ebola virus.
