Univ of Phoenix
Please post your impressions or knowledge of this for profit educational institution.

Is a degree from there of any use?

I am thinking of pursuing something in IT.

A former co-worker will start with them on Jan 31 and I was thinking of joining her.

1. It's very expensive....
I took a few business classes from the University of Phoenix but my company paid. I never could have paid from my pocket. Their professors, all par time, are mostly business people from community businesses. My coworker used to teach a Finance class par time, and he was a Finance Manager. Classes go real fast, cut down to the information and testing. Their degrees are valued in business. It's not as if you're going for a Law Degree and Law Firms require a top University degree, and to be top of your class.

Also your Pell grant mounts up real fast, after all you're getting a degree in half the time and classes are more expensive. It's a good deal for adult students, you finish college faster.

3. I was wondering about whether the degree is respected
When I was in college (many years ago...Reagan administration)...I did better during the summer school classes (straight As in all philosophy and religion classes) and I think it was due to the fact that the classes lasted at the most eight weeks and were more focused.

11. They are regionally accredited
By the North Central Association (IIRC) one of several regional accrediting agencies which evaluate colleges and universities to ensure that member institutions meet certain standards of instruction, etc. This means that their coursework will be accepted by most respected universities.

It doesn't mean most respected universities will look particularly favorably on that coursework, though, since reputation-wise, it is generally not considered a high-quality institution. It's not a diploma mill (being regionally accredited), but it has a reputation for ease of achievement.

5. About 6 months back I heard a bit on NPR about this program.
They did not speak very highly of it- basicall saying if you paid a pile of money you could get a degree without really learning anything.

6. It was founded by John Sperling. Check out his bio.

Sperling wrote the book, "The Great Divide" which talks about the division between Metro and Retro America.

Not sure about the school itself, but Sperling is a visionary.

8. Do some research first
We do not consider them "real" degrees. Many businesses, colleges, and universities do not.

See for example:

"A government review of the University of Phoenix, the country's largest for-profit university, paints a picture of a school so hungry to enroll new students that it has threatened and intimidated its recruitment staff in meetings and e-mail, pressured them to enroll unqualified students and covered up its practices to deceive regulators."

10. It's probably no worse
than getting a degree from your local city college.

That being said, your local city college is probably a lot cheaper, and has been doing this for years. Often, especially for degrees like general business and education, they offer accelerated classes and night classes as well -- so at least investigate a local school before enrolling in UOP.
