Question about web hosting
I'm looking for a decent quality (but cheap) web host for a friend. I don't need anything fancy, it's just for a very basic web site. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

And yes, I'm a web developer - you'd think I'd already know of one :)

Fact is though, I haven't had to look for an independent web host for a long time. So I'm looking to see if anyone has any recommendations for REALLY cheap services that they've used with minimal problems, because my friend's on a very tight budget.

Thanks!
EG

8. But they do come with those annoying pop-up site markers
And the free-server banners.

Yahoo/Geocities now offer some inexpensive webhosting options without the site adverts and with expanded storage and linking capabilities.

They run about $10 per month.

5. Dreamhost
Dreamhost Is my favorite. I'm using 5 different hosts for clients at the moment and they seem to be the best. I've had my personal site with them for over 3 years and not a single complaint about them. Thay have the best control panel that I've seen. And another huge point in their favor they always let you know via email ahead of time if they are going to make any changes to their servers that have any chance at all of causing an outage.

PowWeb on the other hand just installed new servers and a site I have with them was down for 2 days with no notice. Their response was "we put an announcement up on our message boards." Who checks every message board everyday? Overall I'm not unhappy with them just think they need better communication with their customers. You do get a lot for the money with them.

9. Yeah, hostricity
They host RadioLeft and advertise on it, or at least they did when I started the page. When I signed up, the owner wrote me to talk about politics. Good Dem.

7. Ooops, I sent you an email, I meant to send a P.M.
Check out the first on my list, they'll take personal checks and they have discounts for "artists." Their definition of "artist" is quite broad.

Oooooh, ooooooh, everybody, I'm an "Artist!"

Local guys are good, especially any you find who have a good direct connection to the internet backbone, not those who are operate through resellers, who usually do not share your political convictions, who will kneel whenever Lord Ashcroft calls.

If you are a lefty, learn to live with the internet libertarians. It is always good to have a few friends who think "Live free or die" is a good motto, because they will take the heat for you, and protect your children.

EarlG, you are seated somewhere at the left hand of God, third row down, to put up with all the crap that goes on here at DU.

Peace be with you.
