Surely someone else than I likes the White Stripes?

Why do so many people hate this band?

1. Saw Them in Concert Last Week
At the Hollywood Bowl. Their stage presence was quite good, although I couldn't help but notice that she was a very mediocre drummer and singer, IMO.

2. I'm going to have to say "contrived"
they just so perfectly fit into Moe Syzlac's definition of postmodernism... "weird for the sake of being weird".

Their quirkiness seems so...manufactured to me, I guess.

5. I only heard of them about two months ago.
I'd never heard of them before. For the last 2 years I've been out of "radio" contact. But something hit me just "right" when I heard the WS for the first time....I have to admit they're my favorite band of the moment.

Hmm, I think they're all right... wannabees but at least the music is somewhat tolerable.

7. Part of it to me is that they sound like they're enjoying
making music and that it's not just some joe-job like it is for corp hacks.

12. they're okay.
I don't mind them. I like quirky bands. My teenage daughter and her friends are huge fans. They met Jack and Meg at a festival about a month ago and went nuts. Meg was quite nice to them and talked to them for quite a while. I thought that was pretty cool for her to spend time talking to a bunch of starstruck teens like that.

14. Meg's a real sweetie...
I met her a couple of years ago in Cleveland. And Jack's a hell of a guitar player, if you're into that open-E blues stuff, which I am. I don't really like the new album, though -- I prefer the first two records. Especially "De Stijl."

Nonetheless, if you wanna talk one guitarist/one drummer minimalist bands, I prefer the Bassholes.

from the couple of years he spent in Jeff Evans' and Don Howland's apprenticeship in the Gibson Bros.

22. That was around the same time...
Spencer was in Memphis with the Gibsons. Pussy Galore was a FANTASTIC band, and I think my high esteem for them (and the Gibsons) may have artificially lowered my opinion of JSBX.

15. Basically --
It's the old it's cool to hate them syndrome. The Stripes were anointed the next thing by the press, so this is the natural reaction.

In truth, they are quite good, especially in terms of the music that hits the airwaves these days.

Check them out too.

So do the Strokes, the Vines, the Hives, and Tenacious D.

I have all of those albums. They're all good bands.

1. White Stripes
2. The Hives
3. The Strokes
4. The Vines
5. Tenacious D (not really alternative because they kinda lampoon arena rock).

:hi:

26. Response to both you and Vince....
....I should add Bowling For Soup. Guilty pleasure of mine. The music's not bad, but their hook is their lyrics. A very fun band.

Anybody who writes a line "Her CD changer's full of singers that are mad at their dads" has GOT to be worth listening to.

Check out the song "Punk Rock 101" to hear a real good cross-section of their music.

23. I laughed my ass off...
When I heard the Hives on the radio. I had heard that song (Hate to Say I Told You So) two years earlier on a comp. tape my buddy made me, and I was utterly perplexed as to why mainstream rock radio was playing Scandinavian "Nuggets"-addicts. The next song was "Fell in Love with a Girl" by the WS, and I nearly drove off the road.

All I could think was "don't they have some Backstreet Boys or something to play? Rock and roll isn't played on the radio any more!"

Dexter and Crow put on one of the best shows I've ever seen.

And tell me "Apple Blossom Time" isn't the most beautiful song ever.

I dig them for the exact reason you stated. It really is about the music. That really hit home with me when I saw them in concert in Austin.

Sleater-Kinney is still the best though.

35. Scott Morgan's various bands, the Gories...
Detroit rock & roll has a great history from the bands alfredo mentioned in the '60s and '70s (any MC5 fan MUST check out Sonic's Rendevous Band) through the '80s and '90s (the mighty Gories, Bantam Rooster) to today (White Stripes, Paybacks, Detroit Cobras).

Additionally, Jack White was in a band several years ago called Two Star Tabernacle, who backed up Detroit soul legend Andre Williams ("Jailbait") on a fantastic single.
