13. NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
He was the best. Nobody else even comes close. This is very sad... I always hoped he would write his memoirs.

I just read this week that he'd been writing the occasional joke for Letterman to use. He'd get a kick out of hearing it used on TV.

I also remember reading about his weekly poker game, that goes back many many years. Neil Simon, Johnny, Steve Martin, and one or two other great comedians. Can you imagine how much fun those games were?

RIP Johnny.

18. Very sad. He was such a good guy,
and very much an animal rights supporter. I just read an article last week about how he still writes jokes and will occasionally send them to Letterman (who often uses them) b/c he sees Letterman as more his late-night heir than Leno.

At least he got to do what he loved to do most of his life, which is more than many of us can say.

26. I don't recall anyone saying, "Hey did you see 'The Tonight Show' "?
The question was always, "Did you see Johnny Carson last night"?

He was a huge cultural influence; everyone I know watched the last week of "his" show and I've been missing him for years now.

Deepest sympathies to his family.

Edited on Sun Jan-23-05 02:17 PM by terrya
Today, we think of Leno or Letterman or Don Imus or Howard Stern as having an impact on current events. But Johnny Carson was the first.

This is a television pioneer. I think only Walter Cronkite's passing will have as much importance in television history as Carson's death is.

Condolences to his family.

52. oh how sad!
he was part of my upbringing and desire to be a comedienne (sp?) - a huge influence.

when we were kids, my brother and i would shut the doors to the tv room and turn the tv down real low to watch johnny. this was when he was on at 11:30 eastern time, so it was way late for us little boogers! i guess we'd wake my mother up with our laughing, and she'd come in all surprised that we were up. hahaha i don't think she was really surprised!

Edited on Sun Jan-23-05 10:23 PM by HeyManThatsCool

He was a pioneer. I loved his show when I was a kid- & I thought the Tonight show blew without him. He was SOO much better than Leno.

Because of the story that came out in the last week about Johnny writing a few jokes for Letterman he'd been on my mind. I was really hoping he was doing ok.

Today on MSNBC I heard that Access Hollywood had gotten word at the beginning of the month that things weren't looking good & the producer for A.H. called in & said he'd been updating Johnny's Obit package these last few weeks. Makes you think that last week when the Carson/Letterman story came out that Johnny & family were letting you know one last time who his REAL succesor was.

R.I.P. Johnny.
