What is "what the fuck" supposed to mean?
I could never quite understand where that phrase originated. I know what the context is for it's use, but what exactly does it MEAN?

4. Well yeah, I know the context, but what the heck does it MEAN?
:)

Is it like an abbreviation for what the F*&k are you doing goofing around when you should be doing XXXX?

I mean, it makes no sense. :)

2. "What the fuck..."
Edited on Mon Jan-24-05 02:04 PM by skypilot
...as in "What is going on?!" "The fuck" is simply an intensifier, as in "What the fuck is going on?", and over time the whole thing just gets shortened to "What the fuck...?"

3. WTF??
"What the fuck are you talking about?" or "What the fuck is that all about?"

I guess it's just using the worst cuss word to get your point across.

I really don't know what the fuck it means.

5. Precisely.
I mean, we all know the context it is used in, but since when does "the fuck" make sense as a modifier?

Fuck is a verb.

So at the very least, "what the fuck" is grammatically incorrect :)

6. Actually fuck can be used as any type of word
There is a great comedy sketch (by George Carlin I think, but not certain) that shows its use as all word types.

8. It also means
"yeah, why (the fuck) not". As in, "Another beer?" "Yeah, what the fuck."

11. When I use it out loud, it expresses my truly pissed off disbelief…
…at whatever is currently happening, or in front of me, or that I have to deal with but would definitely rather not.

Followed in some cases by "Fuck ME!" (always said in an empty room.)

"It's elastic, seductive, blunt, persuasive, sexy and flexible. It can be a verb, a noun, an adjective, anything."

-- Bob Geldof on his favorite word, "fuck."
