Edited on Wed Jan-26-05 05:33 AM by Archae
No John Denver slamming, please.

I finished listening to the songs on "Poems, Prayers and Promises," I love that tape I just got.

Others I like:

Calypso
Saturday Night In Toledo Ohio
Grandma's Feather Bed
Annie's Song
Thank God I'm A Country Boy
Take Me When I'm Gone To Forest Lawn

Any others?

1. Rocky Mountain High
says a lot about the environmental issues. Profound.

Also,
Sunshine on my Shoulders
Leaving On a Jet Plane

are my biggest favorites.

4. Rhymes and Reasons, especially after 9/11
Edited on Wed Jan-26-05 07:05 AM by LosinIt
I have always loved the sentiment, but the lyrics after 9/11 are especially chilling.

So you speak to me of sadness
And the coming of the winter
Fear that is within you now
It seems to never end
And the dreams that have escaped you
And the hope that you?ve forgotten
You tell me that you need me now
You want to be my friend

And you wonder where we're going
Where's the rhyme and where's the reason
And it's you cannot accept
It is here we must begin
To seek the wisdom of the children
And the graceful way of flowers in the wind

For the children and the flowers
Are my sisters and my brothers
Their laughter and their loveliness
Could clear a cloudy day

Like the music of the mountains
And the colours of the rainbow
They?re a promise of the future
And a blessing for today
Though the cities start to crumble
And the towers fall around us
The sun is slowly fading
And it's colder than the sea

It is written from the desert
To the mountains they shall lead us
By the hand and by the heart
They will comfort you and me
In their innocence and trusting
They will teach us to be free

For the children and the flowers
Are my sisters and my brothers
Their laughter and their loveliness
Could clear a cloudy day

And the song that I am singing
Is a prayer to non believers
Come and stand beside us
We can find a better way

5. "I Guess He'd Rather Be in Colorado"
Edited on Wed Jan-26-05 06:50 AM by Old Crusoe
--although I first heard it by Mary Travers on her first solo album, with Denver playing guitar.

Denver could write highly singable songs. To my ear, they often sounded better when Mary Travers got a hold of them.

20. Sounds to me like your aunt and uncle knew what --
-- they were doing and your keen ear helps preserve songs like that one from being forgotten.

It's just a great song.

27. Please Daddy, don't get drunk this Christmas
Artist/Band: Denver John
Lyrics for Song: Please, Daddy (Don't Get Drunk On Christmas)
Lyrics for Album: Rocky Mountain Christmas
Please Daddy, don't get drunk this Christmas
I don't wanna see my Mumma cry
Please Daddy, don't get drunk this Christmas
I don't wanna see my Mumma cry

Just last year when I was only seven
And now I'm almost eight as you can see
You came home at a quarter past eleven
Fell down underneath our Christmas tree

Please Daddy, don't get drunk this Christmas
I don't wanna see my Mumma cry
Please Daddy, don't get drunk this Christmas
I don't wanna see my Mumma cry

Mumma smiled and looked outside the window
She told me son, you better go upstairs
Then you laughed and hollered Merry Christmas
I turned around and saw my Mumma's tears

Please Daddy, don't get drunk this Christmas
I don't wanna see my Mumma cry
Please Daddy, don't get drunk this Christmas
I don't wanna see my Mumma cry
No, I don't wanna see my Mumma cry

.
and the song "Poems, Prayers and Promises" and most all John Denver's older work I really, really love.

He was a committed environmentalist and really worked hard for that cause.

I was sad when he died because he was working so hard to try to preserve the wilderness in Alaska.

Do I have the title right? On this album he did a cover of John Prine's 'Angel From Montgomery'. He did a good job. I always thought it was his best record.

Edited on Wed Jan-26-05 04:15 PM by Debi
but I'm Sorry does make me cry....

(Those would be favorites...but the Eagle and the Hawk is awesome as well....)

on edit:

I am the eagle, I live in high country
In rocky cathedrals that reach to the sky
I am the hawk and there’s blood on my feathers
But time is still turning they soon will be dry
And all of those who see me, all who believe in me
Share in the freedom I feel when I fly

Come dance with the west wind and touch on the mountain tops
Sail o’er the canyons and up to the stars
And reach for the heavens and hope for the future
And all that we can be and not what we are

Words and music by john denver and mike taylor
