Florida Judge Orders Unruly Defendant's Mouth Taped Shut

LARGO, Fla. -- A Largo judge had to order officers to tape shut the mouth of a convicted killer who was cursing and spitting during a court appearance.

Judge Brandt Downey sentenced 25-year-old Emory Carter to life in prison last month for murder.

Downey later realized he had forgotten to ask Carter if he wanted an attorney for his sentencing.

So corrections deputies brought Carter back to court Monday in a Hannibal Lecter-like restraint chair. That didn't shut Carter up.

This time Downey told bailiffs to use duct tape.

(For the youngsters, Judge Hoffman had Bobby Seale bound and gagged during the Chicago 7 trial in 1969.)
