What is the difference between European Skinheads & American Skinheads
To my knowledge Euro Skinheads were originaly non racist, soccer freaks, that hated hippies and the wealthy. But we all know about American Skinheads and their ilk it's just the European Skinheads I'm interested in. The reason why is because I saw an episode of "Black Books" recently where Bernard Black was trying to get out of filing his taxes by provoking these Skinheads to beat him so badly that he'd be excused from filing.

2. Don't know about TV portrayal of Skinheads, here or there. But, it's TV..
so I'd take it with a big grain of it's TV salt.

3. I knew non-racist American skins
Edited on Thu Jan-27-05 11:13 PM by Zuni
when I was younger.
The original skins in the UK often went Paki-bashing and beat up on immigrants, but many of them were into the West Indian scene
They were mostly working class lads from East London originally

Nazi skins came in later with the British National front party, and followed to Europe and the US

5. yes. the whole skinhead thing is long and complicated
they were more into ska then reggae. reggae is more religious. I was avoiding this thread because it takes too long to explain the nuances and I am feeling kind of lazy right now. I knew/know skins from the punk scene. some are racist(not the ones i knew), some are "traditional," (which can mean kind of right wing, not racist, but somewhat homophobic and patriotic), there are far leftist skins called "redskins" and even "queerskins". the last part of my screenname "blitz" is the name of a skinhead/punk band from the 80's named Blitz.
