Mountain of cow manure that spontaneously combusted is now just smoldering

A huge mountain of cow manure is seen smoldering at a feedlot near Milford, Neb., Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005. The estimated 2,000-ton pile of burning cow manure spontaneously combusted about two months ago and continues to smolder despite attempts to douse it. (AP Photo/Nati Harnik)

6. Holy steaming pile of shit!
That's funny! Well, not really, if you consider all the methane that was released into the atmosphere...

Good point about the methane. How long do you think it will take the anti-environment crowd to get that into their talking points?

19. The sad part of it to a farmer like me is...
...all the man had to do was make a modest investment in a propane sterilization facility and he could have been bagging and selling that stuff by the semi load as garden compost. (The sterilizer heats the manure to kill off bacteria and also weed seeds.)

We're probably looking at millions of dollars of compost sitting in those piles, at around $1 a 50-pound bag wholesale. Now, rather than a revenue source, it has become an expense item in his operation.

25. Well you learn something new everyday
I really meant this as a joke towards exploding shit not the farmers.

I understand that manure can get very hot and a pile this size was just waiting for it.

Yes that does seem like a great revenue source if they had managed it well. Maybe they just won't get as much out of it but still get something.

28. They look like regular li'l mountains,
good for climbing and such. I cannot believe they're actually huge piles of manure. Can we stop the farm subsidies yet? They've got plenty of fertilizer already.
