Driver "freaks out," hits students after snowball attack

An Irondale High School student who told police that he "freaked out" and deliberately drove his car through students on a sidewalk after they threw snowballs at him in New Brighton on Tuesday was charged Thursday with second-degree assault and criminal vehicular operation.

Steven P. Arnold, 18, of New Brighton appeared in Ramsey County District Court on Thursday and was being held in the county jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Two 17-year-old Irondale students were injured but not hospitalized, police said.

Witnesses told police that Arnold was driving south on Long Lake Road a block south of the high school just after 2 p.m. Tuesday when someone in a group of three Irondale students walking north on the other side of the road threw a snowball at Arnold's car.

Steven ArnoldArnold passed the group but quickly turned around, drove up on the sidewalk and through the group from behind, injuring two of them, the complaint states.

One 17-year-old boy was hit and thrown onto the car's hood before falling off to the side, police said. The boy was unconscious for a time and was taken to an urgent-care clinic by a parent.

A second 17-year-old boy was struck on the right hand by the car, fracturing a bone. A third boy jumped out of the car's path and was not injured, police said.

The car that struck the boys drove off without stopping, but neighbors who saw the incident reported the car's license number to police.
