3. That is amazing
but I have seen ice storms in Maryland like that, only not quite as bad.
Very, very dangerous weather. I remember there were storms like that about 10 years ago.

9. Holy CRAP! That would really suck.
:wow: Damn that is some thick ice.

Me thinks it's gonna take a little bit more than a spray can of lock de-icer to get a key in the door to unlock it:scared: Ya think:freak:

It is fascinating to see though. Those ice smothered trees, interesting:-)

Thanks for sharing:hi:

God I know. It's amazing.
May I never complain about a paltry 1/2 inch coating of ice on my car again. Well maybe not 'never' again;-) I hate ice and sleet and freezing rain, it tends to make me scream and curse more than I should :bats innocent eyes:. Snow I can deal with - to a point of course - but ice, hate the shit x(

Did your friend happen to say what the temperature is?

17. No, seriously!
And I'm not trying to contravene Skinner's "no sex" policy!

The difference between the two is simply the difference between ice and snow.

As to the meteorological difference, well, I'll leave that up to somebody that knows better than I.

18. An ice storm is freezing rain
Edited on Fri Jan-28-05 02:16 PM by AlabamaYankee
When the upper air is above freezing and the ground temp is below, rainfall freezes on contact (Fruit growers in the South will spray mist on trees to insulate them from freezing temps). A snow storm dumps snow on the ground which simply piles up. Freezing rain coats everything with a layer of ice. The more rain, the more ice; that one must have been a doozier.

21. I'd take snow any day over ice
And I'm sure many of you who have experience an ice storm would agree with me. I had to drive home once in an ice storm and my antenna was accumulating ice and it was bouncing from side to side. Power outages.... oh I hope we (SC) don't get too much of an icestorm this weekend.

22. I'm in North Georgia
And we are expecting a nasty ice storm tonight. I've been through a couple of them since I've lived here. I agree, no fun. You don't dare drive, since where I live, they don't have the capability to de-ice all the roads.

I think it was called Cohutta or something.... anyway it was freezing cold there and me and the other person I was camping hiking with were the only wackos out there.... and the ride home was not fun either!

20. better known as sleet storm
Water becomes supercooled in the upper atmosphere but for some reason or other doesn't become snow. It falls as rain but instantly freezes on contact.

24. I've only been in one serious ice storm.
Usually the power goes out becuase of falling power lines or trees falling on the power lines.

It can be some of the scariest driving weather there is...

I was at home with our kids, there was no telephone, no power, and every few minutes you'd hear a giant CRACK as a tree or branch came down. It seemed like forever before my wife made it home from work.

But it was really pretty, in a scary sort of way.
