First baseman fields questions regarding war protest
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/baseball/mlb/01/27/bc.bbn.marlins.delgado.ap/index.html?cnn=yes

MIAMI (AP) -- Carlos Delgado is willing to stand up for his beliefs -- or, in his case, not stand up.

At his introductory news conference Thursday with the Florida Marlins, Delgado said he'll continue to not stand up this season during the playing of God Bless America.

An opponent of the war in Iraq, Delgado refused to stand when God Bless America was played last season at games involving his Toronto Blue Jays. Instead, he would stay on the bench or go into the dugout tunnel.

"I wouldn't call it politics, because I hate politics," Delgado said Thursday after finalizing his four-year, $52 million contract. "The reason why I didn't stand for God Bless America was because I didn't like the way they tied God Bless America and 9/11 to the war in Iraq in baseball.

Cool! now i really like him and i applaude the marlins for signing him!

2. The idiots will crucify him
I remember the flak that Mahmoud Abdul Rauf (?? formerly Chris Jackson) received when he wouldn't rise for the anthem.

3. I'm not sure what they can do to him
With 52 million dollars in the bank, I think popularity among rightwing jerkoffs isn't really bothering him.

4. When the hell will they go back to letting baseball be baseball
The 7th inning stretch is the last call for beer and an opportunity to belt out TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME, not stand (with hand over heart, what the fuck??? -- it AIN'T the national friken anthem!!!!! it's a KATE SMITH song, fachrissake!) and have to be forced to participate in a faux nationalistic observance.

I wish some brave baseball owner would just take it back to the old days....enough of this shit! It's BASEBALL, not politics!!!!
