24. It's The Repetitive Droning Bass That Disturbs the Peace
It seems that Rap and Hip-Hop cannot be produced without the repetitive bass.

I have walked outside my apartment to find closed automobiles with windows rolled up pumping out so much bass that my windows rattle. The owner is nowhere to be found.

That is the height of disrespect. I don't find classical music lovers acting the same way - only young thugs acting tough, or so they believe. I can only conclude that Rap and Hip-Hop encourages such disrespectful behavior.

Kill the bass and most, if not all, of the problem goes away.

30. IMO any music you don't want to listen to right then
is what is annoying. For example in college I had roommates who kept me up with Pink Floyd and Yes (among others) Both were bands I liked, but damn if I wasn't irritated to hear it then.

Plus, bass is the hardest range to hide from--it cuts through walls and earplugs. I finally figured out that turning on a loud fan would interfere with it and bury it. Then I could sleep.

16. Yeah, but you're not blaming the speakers for the problem.
That is, after all, what is causing your problem.

Instead, you're taking your complaints about a few kids waking you up, and using it to smear an entire genre of music.

Do you see now why we have a problem with this?

Just watch the videos associated with both Rap and Hip-Hop.

The only impression I get is one of a bunch of thugs.

That is an image problem not of my making.

22. Fine - most mainstream rap is shit, anyway.
And if that's all you see, I can see how it's easy to develop a negative opinion of the music. But just like pop, or rock, or anything else, there's a vast majority of hip-hop artists beneath the radar whose music is very positive.

And FYI, I am a music lover with a very large LP and CD collection that covers many musical styles - just not Rap and Hip-Hop.

20. People re-invent blank verse every generation;
Edited on Sat Jan-29-05 04:09 PM by Vitruvius
nothing wrong with that. Tho' I personally do not enjoy blank verse per se or as hip-hop or rap, other people do, and good for them!

Funny, tho' -- blank verse is considered high-brow, but hip-hop & rap are not -- even tho' -- for example -- some of Queen Latifah's work is quite good...

28. I know very little rap written in blank verse
most of it is rhymed iambs, frequently in pentameter, but not exclusively. Occassionally rappers make use of feminie rhyme instead of masculine rhyme, too, but that happens less frequently than the deviations from pentameter, if only because rappers sometimes love long poetic versification (and use Alexandrines or even longer lines).
