The Kumbh Mela - largest gathering of people in human history.
In 2001 70,000,000 hindus attended this pilgrimage which happens every 12 years.
Here's a satelite photo of people bathing in the Ganges river at the end of the pilgrimage.

Saw a documentary last night about it - AMAZING! I had no idea. I had never even heard of it.

1. That sure is one big party
There was a load of stuff about it on television over here last time around. Other than that it is completely ignored.

8. Is that the documentary by Ira Cohen?
I met him a few times a few years ago. He's a fascinating, wonderful guy. (For example, he published a literary magazine out of Morocco in the early 60s. You can see a copy of it on the mantelpiece on a Bob Dylan album cover) One of the first and last of the real boho hippies, he struck me. Very warm and smart, and a great poet and photographer: I'm honored to have a picture of me and a friend by him.

Fitting that my 500th post should be thinking about him. :toast:
