I've been so disillusioned with politics lately.
Edited on Sat Oct-04-03 09:58 PM by Loyal
I'm so disillusioned with politics, folks. The crap in GD is simply unbearable. Even with the new rules, it still seems terrible. I want to get Bush out of office in 2004 as much as anyone here, but I really don't know if I can take all of this. I already feel hated by a lot of people here, and I've only been here a week. I've made a few friends, but not many. This isn't the way it's supposed to be. Maybe I should just stop whining, but I sense that other people feel the way I do, too.

Before finding DU, I would help out on local campaigns sometimes, I would make calls, and I would vote in November. I feel like if I go back to that, even with voting in the Democratic primary, and voting in the 04 general election, that it won't be enough. I feel like if I don't do my fair share and Bush wins in 04, that it will be my fault. I wouldn't have made enough phone calls, or put enough signs down, or gotten enough people to the polls, and because of that Bush won.

I feel like if I go back to my status quo and simply vote, that it won't be enough. I sense that I'm rambling here, but I just don't feel that I'm making a difference. Not just on here, but in the world. Am I wrong? Maybe I have more problems than I think. I feel like maybe I should leave, because I don't think I'm helping. Would people hate me if I stayed? Would people hate me if I left?

1. crying? There's no crying in polilitics!
Nobody hates you, we don't know you well enough to hate you yet. You're going to have to give that one time.

Please don't take anything that seriously. This can be a rough place, but it is also filled with really smart nice and funny people.
Stick around.

In fact I might have to go slap around some people crying about the games today.

2. Yikes, that's a lot to comment on.
Why is it important to make a difference? Don't you make a difference for yourself and those close to you? Not everyone can be Gandhi. Why do you need to be? You make a difference on DU. I assume you make a difference on yourself (learning, developing, etc.), and with those around you. Read some philosophy. Get into book groups. Take classes. You already do more in the political realm than 99.99% of people. No one here hates you. If they did, so what? The quickest way to make enemies is to take a stand. So, make some enemies! Just be true to yourself. Glad to have you here.

3. Loyal, stay.
I'm sure there are a lot of people who feel the same way you do. I know I do sometimes - hell most times. Guess I was naive about politics but, I'm getting an education here on DU.

Everyone is under a lot of stress because of what happened in 2000 and what has been happening since. Just hang in there. PM anytime. And be strong.

6. Hate you? Hell, I don't even recognize your name yet.
Please. Hate takes a long time.
You are not even annoying yet.
Come, join the party. This is a great place. Who needs GD? I used to post over there too. What's the point? I rarely leave the lounge, unless to look at PM's or sometimes LBN.

GD used to be a nice place before the war. I predict it will be again, someday.

Welcome. There is not another place on the web like this one, and that is because of the people here.

You just have to trust me on this one for a while.

I think most of us have had to back out for a bit now and then because it can get overwhelming.

don't leave because there's no better place to stay informed to what he the TRUTH is.

8. Please stay, Loyal!
And yes, I'm serious, and I am not being sarcastic!

We need everyone we can to help debunk Bush's lies and tear down his regime and his Rovian propaganda machine. EVERY LAST MEMBER of DU can help in that effort.

9. disillusionment is normal.
Join the club! ;)

Seriously, we're glad to have you on board. The fact that you vote+ means you do more than most people in the country.

I was feeling mighty disillusioned for awhile. See, I made phone calls and did the door-to-door thing as well. For Mel Carnahan. You know, the guy from MO who was killed (murdered?) in a plane crash two weeks before the 2000 elections, yet still beat John Ashcroft? Yeah... imagine how shitty I felt (and useless! And ready to give up on politics!) when Ashcroft was appointed to one of the most coveted/important positions in politics. Like I wanted to shoot myself.

Oh well, enough about me. Sit back and enjoy the ride!

(oh... and 600+ posts in just a week...? Wow!)

17. DU intensified my activism, it also made me feel somewhat ineffectual.
Edited on Sat Oct-04-03 10:40 PM by JanMichael
I started to go to protests, hell even made it to DC, and I also drifted as far to the Left as possible with(out) singing L'Internationale in the shower every morning.

I also began to see the Plutocratic/Corporatist stranglehold on the Media, Politics and much of Society, that's fucking depressing.

I know how you feel.

25. What's to hate?
Look, it gets you down some times. You've worked on campaigns and know just how depressing things can really get. You also know the highs you can get when things are clicking.

Political campaigns are draining. You've got a lot personally invested and sometimes it just seems like it doesn't make a damn bit of difference. And there are times when it really doesn't make a damn bit of difference. There are times when it just feels like the time to just throw in the towel. But, so what? You do what you think is right and the hell with the rest of them.

Don't worry about GD. You've got trolls, disrupters, political newbies, and loads of the clueless. You've also got people firmly committed to something and just won't take "no" for an answer. And you've got a few who should be committed. But, the good stuff makes up for the slag.

Just ignore anyone looking to pick a fight. It's really the easiest thing in the world on discussion groups. I spent a lot of time on Usenet saying, "Homey don't play that game."

There's still a lot of good stuff here, possibly more than any other progressive discussion group. You just have to filter it.

Really filter it.
