Report on the "Penis Head" statue
I went early to my concert just to see this "outrageous" piece of art. My first impression was that is is very small. From the picture in the paper it looked huge. It really looks more like a cartoon than an evil bishop. The mitre hat, well, if you look at it and think penis I suppose you could see that but in fact it also looked like female genitalia. There were 2 young women, students, looking at it. They didn't think it was bad either and stated that they were very proud that the university was not going to take it down. The plaque on the statue was the story of the artist being a child going to his first confession. To me it just appears to be what a young, frightened child might envision on the other side of the screen. IMO it is not a big deal. We see much worse and more graphic things every day here in Topeka on the signs of Fred Phelps.

Oh, and by the way, the concert went very well. We got a standing O and I am glad to have the season opener down. On to the next.

Can't find the picture in the CJ, but I did not expect to.

Glad the concert went well.

Yes sir, even the conservative backwater of Topeka, Kansas has outrageous art. Sorry I did not post the link. BTW, speaking of outrageous art I printed a copy of your very strange dog. We stuck it in the middle of the second trumpet players Tchaikovsky Symphony. I guess he was pretty taken aback when he turned the page and that was staring at him! I wasn't sure, but I think I heard a gasp behind me. Ah, music. What fun we have.

on edit You know Washburn and the CJ? Lousy paper, decent school

6. Up close and personal
it doesn't look much like a penis either but..... The outlines and curves of the whole hat could resemble female genitalia. The only thing that looked like a penis was the very top of the hat, could resemble a glans. I don't know. To me it was just a rather odd statue representing a kids fear. But then I can be a bit of a perve sometimes.

7. I guess the ... uh.. symmetry ..
with the gold band running the length of it could coax one in that direction, but I really had to study to come up with that. You saw it up close - I didn't.

I didn't think it looked like a penis either.

8. It is art
therefore it is in the eye of the beholder I guess. Art, a grand thing until the fundies get a hold of it. I wonder how long it will be before Ashcroft comes and throws something over it. A rubber raincoat perhaps?

10. I'm Sorry, But That Does NOT Look Like a Penis
No offense to you, MuseRider -- that was the buzz and of course you looked at it with that in mind.

But the first person who saw it and complained -- what the hell kind of pervert were they? I mean, you can see it if someone suggests it to you, but to bring it up in public you must have a very dirty mind. And no sense that other people may look at a cigar and see just a cigar.

I really like the statue by the way. Very individual and surprising. Lots of life and expression. But possibly very disturbing to someone who puts Catholic priests on a pedestal.
