Fox News
Edited on Sun Oct-05-03 11:02 AM by VermontDem2004
Two days ago they had 3 white people on Hannity and Colmes debating whether or not Rush's comments were racist. Of course Cal Thomas and Alan Colmes agreed the comments were NOT racist, yesturday on one show on Fox News, I don't know what is called but they had 5 white people talking about whether or not the comments were racist. This is what I don't understand, of course white people aren't going to get offended by a comment directed towards African-Americans, so why would you have them decide whether or not the comments were racist. Why didn't Oh Really have Kellen Winslow from Fox Sports on his show instead of some White Sports Columnist from some major Newspaper.

1. The real question is whether ESPN hired Rush to appeal to Racists?

3. I doubt it

If ESPN was a racist network they wouldn't hired Tom Jackson, Sterling Sharpe, Michael Irvin, Kevin Frasier, Bryan Cox, Stuart Scott, Andre Aldridge, Harold Reynolds, Joe Morgan, Omar Gooding, Russell Hornsby, these are just some I can name from the top of my head, I am sure there are many more.

6. That's not the question I asked
I asked whether Rush was hired to appeal to Racists? Or who were the new viewers he was supposed to bring to the show?
However, to address your point: If I understand you correctly you would argue that Strom Thurmond wasn't racist because he hired black staffers?

7. Well
Since I never listened to Limbaugh's show I was unsure if he ever made any racist comments, I know he said crazy things like asking for a black helicopter to come by and pick up Tim Robbins after he spoke at the NPC. But I have no idea if Thurmond was a racist in the later parts of his career, I know he was earlier in his career but I have no idea later on it, people can change but I have no idea he did because I can't read his minds. But if you think ESPN is a racist network, all I have to say :eyes:. I think they hired mostly because he was a sports fan who usto be a broadcaster who brings in high ratings for a radio.

9. Why do you think the owner of the Eagles called it a racist network
For Rush and for "Between the Lines."
You know blacks are getting awfully powerful in the sports worldl And maybe some executives at ESPN are getting a bit worried about protecting their positions.
Or as an NBA basketball coach once said, "I never had to confront my racism until my daughter told me she was marrying one of my black players."

11. Hahaha
Ok whatever you say. ESPN said Rush's comments were insensitive and Eagles Owner was wrong for calling ESPN a racist network. A racist network wouldn't put african-americans on their yearly payroll for over 20 years. Rush was hired, now he is gone. You call ESPN a racist network for one hiring but then you ignore over 100 hiring of minorities to make your case, plus african-americans have been powerful in sports for over 30 years.

14. And the plantation owners kept all those poor slaves employed
My ultimate argument would be the reverse of your Strom Thurmond contention. People change, institutions change.
The question then would be: Is ESPN becoming Racist.
And Rush's hiring, and the "Between the Lines" program seem to indicate there is some sort of "backlash" going on in the executive offices.
And the idea is to contain the craziness before it spreads. But to do that you have to recognize Racism as it encroaches, and not feel comforted by such notions like, "It couldn't be happening at ESPN because they have black people on the air."
It like saying America couldn't become fascist because we have a Constitution. When it happens, it's too late to take action
And thats all I'll ever say on the subject.

15. The african-americans on ESPN
are free to choose whether to leave or stay unlike Slaves so that comparison is Waaay off mark. What is so wrong with the "Between the Lines" program? I watch it every now and then and don't have a problem with it, actually it is pretty good. Plus before Rush made these comments I had no idea whether or not Rush made a comment regarding race, I know he said typical repub crap. But one hiring of Rush completely erases the countless hirings of minorities in your book.

2. That's easy
Fox News is the Racist News Network. They don't want to have anyone on that might make the cretins who view their shows actually have to think that their prejudices may be wrong.

5. "Cal Thomas and Alan Colmes agreed the comments were racist"?
Did you mean to put the word "not" in that sentence?
