Go see "School of Rock"
This may be a dupe, but it not, this is one of the best movies I've seen in years--not important, but magic. You sit through the entire movie with a smile on your face, when you're not laughing out loud or clapping.

Every critic says it, but it's the essence of the movie--it is JOYFUL.

1. Saw it on Friday and posted about it yesterday...
Didn't generate many responses though.

I loved it. I can see where Jack Black could work people's last nerve but I love him and he was perfect in this.

Mostly because as a rock fan, I didn't feel like this was some old screenwriter or studio exec tryinto pander to rock fans. Honestly I always got the sense that everyone involved in this felt as sincerely about the power of rock music to transform the life of a misfit kid, as much as the character of Dewey did and as much as I did and do. They never played Dewey for too much of a dupe, just a hopeless dreamer who realizes that dreams manifest themselves in small ways that are sometimes just as powerful as the big ones.

Hokey? Yes but I believe it 100% and so did this movie. It never went for the cheap emotion.

2. Everything you said, and
it also gets to the idea that, in growing up, we shouldn't let all the joy in us die. Stick it to the man, rock on, and do and be what you love.

My problem with the movie is that it has spoiled me as a movie goer for a while--in a choice between any other movie and seeing this again, I'd see this again.

When I was there, the theater was packed. No one left until all the credits had completely rolled. The theater itself was loud, raucous, enjoying and loving every minute. One of the cheapest highs I've ever had ($5.50 for me, cause I now get in as a senior).

5. I have never seen 3 things....
Edited on Sun Oct-05-03 03:07 PM by vi5
1)People waiting until all the credits were done before leaving. I mean not one single person left their seat until they were entirely done. I've never seen this at a movie where there was nothing afterwards (ie. the alternate ending of 28 Days Later).

2)An entire theatre bursting into applause at the end of the movie. I've seen scattered whoops and hollers but this was a huge eruption of applause.

3)Everyone leaving with a huge ear to ear grin on their faces.

To the poster below, you can wait until video and still probably be charmed but if your theater going experience and the audience was anything like mine, you won't want to miss it.

3. I liked Jack Black in High Fidelity
Shallow Hal just sucked. He annoyed the shit out of me on SNL last night. The movie seems like it could be ok, glad to hear a couple of endorsements in the positive. Any reason NOT to wait for the video?

6. Funny and sweet-natured
A nicely twisted version of those "inspirational" teacher movies.
