Linfield does it again; so long, Frosty

A superior defensive effort coupled with just enough offense enabled the mighty Linfield Wildcats, darlings of right-thinking DUers everywhere, to beat the Pacific Lutheran University, uh, "Lutes," by 19-10 Saturday at Maxwell Field.

Linfield got the Lutes right where they wanted them, deep in their own red zone, time after time in the first half, only to turn PLU away. The 'Cats built a 10-3 halftime lead, and increased that to 16-3 early in the fourth when they finally mastered that new-fangled forward pass well enough to score on a "jump ball" pass to the deep corner of the end zone.

The ghosts of eerie losses past surfaced briefly when the Linfield kicker pushed the extra point wide right and every fan in the house simultaneously thought, "Uh oh. Two touchdowns and two extra points means 17-16." Those fears got closer to realization when PLU took the ensuing kickoff and drove the field to close to 16-10. But Linfield iced the victory by driving back down the field before their drive stalled at the PLU 1. A field goal with :52 remaining made the final score.

Longtime PLU coach Frosty Westering paid his last visit to Maxwell Field, and was honored with the unveiling of a plaque before the game as "A Class Act" by Linfield. If your teams hadn't been so good, Frosty, we wouldn't have taken such pleasure beating you all those times.
