I have a chance to leave a Defense contractor job
I've worked for a Fed. Gov. Intelligence/Defense contractor for about 4 years. I've always had some issues with working in the field as it seems I'm partially profiting from dollars going toward the industry of killing.

However, the money is good, I like what I do, and I like the people I work with on a day-to-day basis. I'm not exposed directly to the aspect of the military - violence, weapons, etc - that bothers me.

The new position is a small non-profit.

My question is: on the basis of the military industry alone, would you leave this job?

2. Just on that basis? No.
But, I would carefully consider the financial, emotional and other things that go with working where you do.

You have to look yourself in the mirror and be happy with the person staring back at you at the end of the day.

5. I've always thought of the position as a stepping stone...
...a place to hone my skills... so I've mentally removed myself.

But I've never been 100% comfortable with taking this paycheck.

3. no, I'd stay and be a whistleblower
But if you don't want to do that, get out. I could never contribute, even tangentially, to the war machine.

8. Would you be be getting enough money in the new job?
Edited on Tue Feb-01-05 09:43 PM by tjdee
Will you be able to maintain your lifestyle?

If not, are you okay with that?

Personally I wouldn't do it unless the pay/benefits were comparable and there were greater chances for advancement at the nonprof (probably not).

I think that means I have a heart of darkness. :scared:

on edit: You say you're not comfortable taking the paycheck...you're lucky to have another job to go to, too.

9. pay/benefits are comparable
chances of advancement... not exactly sure.

Heart of darkness? I've been asking myself the same question for years.

10. Then get thee hence!
You're sounding like you want to go but feel kind of touchy feely liberal-y because you want to.

The military machine isn't for everyone.

If your conscience would be clearer, then go on and take the nonprof job. You're the one you have to live with everyday (I think I stole this from someone above).

11. this statement of yours
Says it all to me:

But I've never been 100% comfortable with taking this paycheck.

Some posters have mentioned the salary and benefits.

It's not just about a paycheck and benefits and it's also not just about the person in the job. It's about the psyche, the soul, the spirit and one's contribution to the world.

12. You enjoy your job...
.... and make a desirable salary... yet you're looking to leave?

this just doesn't pass the test in my eye! A good job, a good salary, ... until you decide that your actions lead to or cause something so dreadful that you do not enjoy your work any longer.... GO TO WORK, BE HAPPY, & PAY DOWN YOU MORTGAGE... such that you're no longer a slave to your bills

that will be a true freedom for you!
