Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds" - good? Not good? Could be better?
Edited on Tue Feb-01-05 11:02 PM by Rabrrrrrr
I haven't listened to this in a long time - and just realized tonight it's available on CD. I loved it when it came out! Used to listen to it over and over and over whenever I borrowed the album from the library.

I remember it very fondly. But I've seen occasional references to it here on DU, and it seems there is some dissention as to whether it is worthy or not.

I remember it as quite a masterpiece.

But, let me qualify that by saying that I'm also very much into concept art-rock music that some on DU call "wanking" or "noodling", like King Crimson, Yes, early Genesis, ELP, Jethro Tull, etc.

1. Completely ludicrous, and therefore highly entertaining.
Still, the 'ulla!' sound the Martians make remains terrifying.

2. Of all the music, which I don't remember at all (except the sound/timbre
of it), I still remember very clearly the "Ulla!" sound.

3. I was traumatized at an early age by it.
It is primal.

4. I always liked the song "Forever Autumn"
Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues does it. I don't remember much of the rest of the album. I was just a kid when I heard it all the way through. I would like to hear it again.

5. Forever Autumn
Justin Hayward has an especially touching ballad on that album too.

The song Spirit of Man is also rather good.

It's not the best concept album and I actually think they were constrained by War of the Worlds story, which frankly, isn't that great to begin with. Overall though it's an album I usually end up listening to a few times a year.

6. Not a bad rendition....though it is a product of its time.
I'm not sure it's what Wells would have envisioned, but it's not bad. The sung musical numbers are nothing short of an unintentionally cheesy British Musical, but hey, it could be worse.

Overall, a nice interpretation.
