Teenagers Fined For Handing Out Cookies To Neighbors
Edited on Fri Feb-04-05 08:48 AM by matcom
<snip>

DURANGO, Colo. -- No good deed goes unpunished.

That's the lesson two teenage girls learned Thursday in Durango, after being fined almost $900 for making and delivering cookies to their neighbors last summer.

Taylor Ostergaard, 17, and 18-year-old Lindsey Jo Zellitti gave cookies last July to about nine scattered rural homes south of Durango.

But one 49-year-old woman became so terrified by the knocks on her door around 10:30 p.m. that she called the sheriff's department, then ended up in the hospital emergency room the next day after suffering a severe anxiety attack.

A Durango judge awarded Wanita Renea Young almost $900 Thursday to recoup her medical bills.

Judge Doug Walker said he didn't think the girls acted maliciously, but showed very poor judgment by being out that late.

Court records contained a half-dozen letters from neighbors who said they enjoyed the unexpected treats.

1. 49 years old??
I could understand if it had been an elderly lady. Can we say overreacting? Could she have not just looked out the window to see who it was? Geez. You can't even do anything nice for people anymore.

5. Two things
One: They should have went out earlier. That's for sure.
Two: People west of the Miss. are scared shitless of each other and never talk to each other. If this happened back East, I really don't think that this would be an issue. Especially, if thing number one was followed.

6. 10:30 p.m. is pretty late to be knocking on people's doors
Unless you're in an emergency situation and trying to find help.

However, how hard can it be to yell at the door "Who is it?" and waiting for an answer before freaking out and calling the cops.
