Rosanne's version of the " Star Spangle Banner " was pretty funny...Kate Smith used to do a rendition " God Bless America " that made dogs run away and wallpaper peel.

Alright, so it's not patriotic in a jingoistic, nationalistic way, but it represents a struggle of ALL humanity in overturning tyranny and oppression. I especially like these modern lyrics by Billy Bragg:

in the military. I always used to like Lee Greenwood's - God Bless The USA. It was real touching, and when my father was gone it gave me a good feeling, his sacrifice meant a lot more. The fact that it has been hijacked by these Nationalistic fucks makes me angrier than hell.

It makes me feel grateful enough to know that I should let the Republicans do whatever they want.

It seems to be the consensus around here that it's not "cool" to like this song, but I do too! :ducking:

I really do love the tune. And my dad's people are from Baltimore, so it's a matter of some local pride.

I also love the melody of "Battle Hymn of the Republic," though of course I prefer the "Solidarity Forever" version. :)

back on the 70's when i was following the Dead for a year, i would start singing it while driving down the road with a van stuffed full of fellow hairy hippies. we would all sing along.

i can only imagine what normal folk thought as they saw our beat up van with a painted peace sign and heard us singing it at the top of our lungs.

it really is a beautiful song. and i agree, ray charles does do the best version of it.

it should be our national anthem.

I like the style that these things are in, I found myself tempted to join in 'Men of Harlech' at the rugby yesterday (England - Wales) even though it's all about fighting us. Speaking of which, not technically a patriotic song, but the English rugby fans sing 'Swing low sweet chariot' for some odd reason, which is great.
