Podcasting -- what can you tell me about it?

I stumbled across the wikipedia article on podcasting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcasting), and I found it incredibly interesting. Basically, it sounds to me like it's the audio version of a blog -- you don't have to update it all that frequently, there's a centralized server where you can post your podcasts to, and it seems like anyone can do it given the right technology.

I guess my question is, what is the right technology? If I wanted to start my own podcast, how would I go about doing that? Can anybody tell me a bit more about this? It seems like an extraordinary get-the-word-out device, once people start to figure out how to use it in a more efficient way.
