I took it a couple of weeks ago. I don't really think I'm that smart because I think that puts me up there near genius level and I'm certainly not that. Maybe they got the thing rigged so you score a little higher than usual to get you to buy their stuff.

15. These are some excellent scores
and reflects the true intelligence of DU. My wife took the test the other day and scored 131. She scored 133 on a different test a year or so ago and beat me at that time with 131. I'll do this one when I get time with the goal of beating her 131!

Not to be ugly, but I would love to see the denizens of FR take this test and post results. While there would surely be scores on a par with DU, I think they would have an over abundance of scores in the 90 - 100 range.

somehow I don't think this is right. I am however, a word warrior. But I have scored better on several tests administered in an office setting. I've been in the 130 range.

I know my math ability is weak, but I do have good spatial and logical ability, so I wonder why that score was so low?

23. I Question This Test Too
I have passed, by a large margin, the Mensa test. (Back in the early 1980's).

I scored about 20 points lower on this test (160), then i have on certified tests for most of my life.

So, i've the same "hmmmmm", you do.

26. No Problem
Being surrounded by eggheads for many, many years of my life, i wear my certified IQ as a badge and use it as a hammer. Most of time i'm king of the geeks! So, i know that this number is somehow skewed. I don't know how, but it is somehow.

My guess is that it's not time based. IOW, on most certified IQ tests, the faster you do it the higher you score, since it indicates something about the way one processes information.

I don't think this one is timed. I did it once before and got a 155 and stopped in the middle of it for a 3.5 hour meeting. So one time i did the test in 10 minutes and another time over nearly 4 hours and the score is essentially the same. That's a pretty good clue, i would guess.

But, hey. If everyone can feel better about themselves by adding 20 points, than i feel i've done my good deed for the day.
The Professor

29. If you have an 180 IQ you should be able to figure this out.
How did they score the test?
There's only 20 questions.
Weighted evenly the only way some discrepent scores (133 vs 132) for instance could occur is if the the time to complete the test was factored into the score.
But of course, the questions could have been weighted differently.
And that is my queston to you: What was the weighting scale for this 20 question test that enabled people to repeatedly score 135 or 133 or 132?

37. There's fourty questions
Edited on Tue Oct-07-03 01:30 PM by Bozola
there's a second page.

Further reading reveals that the maximum score obtainable is 144, and yes, there appears to be some "weighting" going on.

Example:

The question of which one was different

coconut
banana
apple
pear
grape

There's no single right answer for this.

Grape is different because they grow on a vine.
Coconut is different because there's no "a" in the name.
Coconut is different because it's hard shelled.
Apple is different because it the only one starting with a vowel.
Pear is different because it has two adjoining vowels.
Banana is different because it's from a herb

etc....

Intelligence tests are generally silly things.

38. How smart can I be.
I took the test two weeks ago (133) and couln't remember that there were forty questions.
And there was definitely one question concerning what a truly knowledgeable person knows that I wasn't completely comfortable with any of the answers presented.
But with the example question you gave, I don't have a bit of doubt that Grapes was the correct answer. And not because Grapes grow on vines, but because they don't grow on trees.
Now, as far as there being many possible answers, I would point out that the Law boards have a section, at least they did when I took them (And no, I'm not a lawyer) that would give you five correct answers to a reading and have you prioritize the relevancy of the the answers. The idea being that intelligent people can make logical deductions as to the relative importance of any particular piece of information, even when faced with competing pieces of relevant information.
And many possible answeres or not, the dominant reason, in the context of the question, was grapes.

44. Chiquita page confirms that Bananas actually grow on plants.
Edited on Tue Oct-07-03 08:57 PM by soupkitchen
A plant which is actually a herb. And the world"s largest plant with a woody stem. So it kind of looks like a tree.
So, I'm wrong. Then what is the right answer to the question?
(At least according to the testers)
Is it possible the test writer thought bananas grew on banana trees also?

48. Just out of curiosity, Why did you pick bananas?
Being that bananas don't grow on trees my choice would be coconuts because they contain milk.
Also are coconuts, fruits or nuts.
Apples, pears, grapes, bananas are fruits, but maybe a coconut isn't.
Yeah, now I'm a coconut man.

true IQ tests should have NO knowledge based questions.

IQ tests should have no vocabulary questions, or geographical questions.

basically, a true IQ test should in NO WAY be influenced by prior knowledge.

take these results with a cup of salt..

Too high, imo. I've taken 10-15 different online IQ tests over the years and the scores have ranged from 129 to 185, most of them suspect. I only take these tests to improve my self-esteem. ;-)

You can say I have an innate ability to perform very well on IQ tests, but not so much on academic exams and tests.

Edited on Tue Oct-07-03 09:17 PM by steviet_2003
I took this one (emode) a month ago or so and got a 138. Reading the threads I noticed a possible discrepancy in that this test seems lower than others. Here's another one I took in July that is timed, I think I got a 171.

http://www.iqtest.com/iqtestprep1.html

On edit: This post may just be buried in the thread, I'll start a new thread.
