My landlady just asked me to install SBC Yahoo service, please help!
My landlady just knocked on my door and asked me if I would help her install SBC Yahoo service to her daughter's computer, which she said is running Win 98.

A couple of questions:

1. I have no experience with SBC Yahoo, and very little with Win 98 as I have cable internet service and XP. However, I have heard that it is possible (and much better) to set up SBC Yahoo service without the CD that they send you. Is the Win 98 Yahoo setup without the CD similar to the XP setup as shown HERE ?
If not, how would I go about installing her internet connection? (I am still googling for answers, even as I type!).

2. My landlady mentioned in an offhand way that her daughter's computer used to have AOL. Would I (I know I should) have to reformat her computer to clean out all of the AOL before going ahead with the internet set up? Can I set up the connection and get it working even with leftover AOL in the system? I don't know if she even has her 98 reinstallation cd - sorry for the lack of information there.

Thank you very much for any and all replies!

1. Just say NO!

Never involve your self in installing/un-installing or otherwise touching any one ELSE'S computer. You will regret it.

Everything that goes wrong will end up being your fault and you will have to fix it.

2. That is what I'm afraid of!

:scared:

On edit: wouldn't Yahoo have tech support that could walk her through the installation? I know they send you the stuff and you hook it up yourself.

7. Thanks - I am still such a neophyte with computers - everything I have
Edited on Sat Feb-12-05 02:47 PM by Lady Effingbroke
learned I have taught to myself. Like you said, who knows what kind of mess I would face, and I can't afford to fix a broken computer OR have her get mad at me.

I wish I could afford to move out of this trailer park and get away from her!

edit: typo

6. I'll have to agree with this.
Be very careful of whose computer you work on. If not, get used to hearing "It was working just fine until you..... (insert lame excuse here)". There are a lot of people I won't help just for this reason.

3. I had no problem installing SBC Yahoo DSL with win 98
I did it on the old office computer and it worked just fine. They've since updated the software but it probably still works with win98.

No clue how to get rid of AOL, I've done it before but that was a long time ago and I have no idea where the newer versions like to hide.

That's nice of you to help set things up. :)

8. two things...
1. AOL is notorious for being difficult to get rid of.
2. I agree with the other posters who said to be leery (basically) of doing this. If anything goes wrong, its all YOUR fault. I used to work tech support and ran into this all the time. I would direct her to SBC's tech support (if they have any).
