Foreign music
Edited on Sat Feb-12-05 06:03 PM by Az
The West is not the only source of music. Listening to Ayumi Hamasaki right now. So what other foreign bands do DUers listen to?

2. Yeah but was hoping for a bit more distant responses
We need to break out of the mold the marketers are trying to keep us in. Go beyond their charts and expectations. Find the great diversity there is in the world. Its a beautiful place out there.

24. This reminds of some Rolling Stone magazine list...
of their version of the 100 greatest albums of all time. All considerations of taste aside, I found it curious that not a single non-English language album found its way on that list. I guess if someone don't speak 'murkan, then they're incapable of producing quality work.

3. I love Googoosh
I was the only dopey white guy at her Staples Center concert a couple years back, but I didn't care. I love her passionate, dramatic voice.

5. Also, occassionally...
I throw in a Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan cd. His music is so soothing and ethereal. Usually like it to wind down after a stressful day.

6. Shooglenifty
They'd be rich and famouse but each set averages around 10 minutes, commercial stations can't play them because of the threat to lost advertising minutes.

8. My college radio station has a scheduling block called "One World Radio."
Edited on Sat Feb-12-05 06:08 PM by NightTrain
Thanks to those DJs, I've heard music from literally all over the globe. I often don't understand the lyrics as the singers perform in their native tongue, but I don't need to know the words to appreciate the quality of the music.

Among my favorite performers whose first language is not English: Yma Sumac, Fela Kuti, Nusrat Fata Ali Khan (sp?), Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Shoukichi Kina.

I also have a love for both Tango and Flamenco music!

10. Euro House/Electronica
Aphrodite, AK1200, Timo Maas, Paul Oakenfold, Faithless, etc.

A lot of hit probably hits the clubs here in the US, too, and isn't really 'unknown' ... it has something more of a cult following, though.

12. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
Fela Kuti, Fema Kuti, Luiz Gonzaga, Pixinguinha... I could go on, since I listen to more music from around the world than I do the corporate coca cola music from here.

21. So sad he died
There is a song on Peter Gabriel's latest album that he was on. It is a very good song.

He had such a wonderful voice that transcended language.

Edited on Sat Feb-12-05 06:18 PM by Maestro
Café Tacuba, Maná, La Ley, Enanitos Verdes, Los Caifanes/Jaguares, Soda Estéreo, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Gypsy Kings (France/Spain), Aterciopelados, Molotov and Plastilina Mosh. I could go on. Suffice it to say that, despite what the Soutwest of the US makes you think, music sung in Spanish is not all that Norteña, Mexican polka crap!!!!!!!!!!

but she is a bit too "pop" for my tastes. The most "pop" in the above groups I mentioned is either Maná or La Ley.
