Male homecoming princess

At my school, each club gets to nominate a "princess" for the homecoming parade. Our small jazz appreciation club (of which I'm a member) ended up nominating a guy.

Of course, the ASB coordinator had a fit, and gave our club chair a long lecture about how it was wrong, etc.

Is this illegal? As a matter of principle, this annoys me. Is it worth urging the club chair to fight it (I talked to him and he realy doesnt want to, he wasnt even willing to tell me what the ASB coordinator said)

My school district is currently loosing a large lawsuit on sexual harassment, is it worth the effort to rattle their chains a little?

1. How does the guy feel?

I'm all for challenging gender stereotypes, and I think it's worth fighting. (There was a lot of attention focused in this neck of the woods a couple years back when a young lesbian woman was elected homecoming king - it even drew out Fred Phelps to protest.)

That said, I wonder how the guy who was nominated feels. If he's cool with it, I definitely think you should fight it. If it's something that was done to make him feel bad (i.e., he was elected because everyone "thinks he's a sissy"), then shame on those who voted for him.

he's all for it; my main problem is convincing the club chair (he's liberal but too cynical) to back me up

4. The whole notion of

Homecoming King and Queen, plus Homecoming Princesses should be completely outdated in the 21st century. Although I like the idea of Homecoming Princes.

It's just a giant popularity contest that is taken much too seriously in some schools.

The school my kids go to is a small one, too small to have a football team, so homecoming is during the basketball season, which makes for an interesting half-time ceremony. It doesn't seem to mean much to the kids, but perhaps it's just my two kids who thought it was silly -- not that either one was ever remotely in the running for Homecoming person.
