Comedians that you never thought were Funny
Edited on Wed Feb-16-05 08:39 PM by Sandpiper
If I had to cast a vote for the most unfunny comedian of all time, it would be:

Pauly Shore

I don't think I've ever even cracked a smile over anything he did.

How about the rest of you?

52. I'll disagree
I always thought he was funny, until his conversion to the dark side after 9/11. He's still occasionally funny, but not nearly as good as during his days on SNL & HBO.

86. I agree with your disagreement.
He was pretty funny before he decided to get political. Good observational humor, effectively could work big and small rooms. And don't forget television. I think he was one of the better SNL news hosts.

And then one day he decided to become a complete and utter loser, and he has sucked royally ever since.

The only reason I watched SNL at that time was for Weekend Update with Dennis Miller.

That Dennis Miller is dead.

98. he seemed funny---BUT

BUT, then i learned how much of his comedy bits were written by barry crimmins, who miller owes his best lines to Barry Crimmins. Miller is a no-talent, spineless fraud and a shill.
---------
crimmins, on the other hand, still rocks, and has a great essay on miller's conversion to dumbed-down rw stupidity worth checking out:

"More than a decade since I wrote my last joke for the man, I can only watch in stupefaction as this once hip and inside comic completes his transformation into a lout whose act sounds as if it were ghostwritten by George Jessel. Actually, that’s not fair ... to George Jessel.

No longer the youthful and sassy anchor of SNL’s "Weekend Update" of all those years ago, Miller has become a national father figure. And what a lousy dad he is. Listening to his act is no longer something we look forward to; it is more like getting stuck in the back seat of your pop’s station wagon while he lectures you on "Americanism" through 30 miles of heavy traffic. In front of your friends."

more at:
http://www.bostonphoenix.com/boston/news_features/this_just_in/documents/02731746.htm
----
and he writes bits for randi rhodes now.

"The world would be a much better place if the court-appointed Bush Administration knew the difference between Americana and Ghengiskhana."

I saw a special on HBO or something called "For Ladies Only" where he completely turned the table on his "Diceman" character and spent most of the routine insulting male attitudes and stereotypes.

Still wouldn't go see his act, but I can't say he never made me laugh.

46. I LOVED Sam Kinison!
He had balls. An ex-preacher not afraid to tell the truth about his past, or about religion. LOL. His bit about the crucifixion was priceless. Or the time he would get a guy in the audience and phone an ex who cheated on him, and then embarrass her on live HBO.

I saw him live and he had masterful timing. He was the real thing. No fake, forced, clichéd humor from him. No tired one-liners. I miss him. Killed by a drunk driver just after getting married. Fuck!

I'm sorry you never made a "love connection", but if you ever saw Sam Kinison live, he was pee-your-pants funny from start to finish, with a style all his own.

He is on the list of my favorite comedians headed by Bill Hicks, another comic who was taken from us way too early.

I've been saying this about Leary since day one. I guess if you're going to steal someone's schtick, make sure it's from someone who was on the cutting edge when he died.

Unfortunately for Leary, he does not have Bill Hicks' congenial Central Texas good-ol'-boy personality to help sell his rants. He just comes off looking like an asshole. While with Hicks, you laughed WITH him, not in spite of him.

48. that ridiculously stupid cheesedick
larry the cable guy.

flame me, or call me crazy, but he's from northwest florida, and i see sleeveless-flannel shirted nascar-fan redneck jackasses like him everyday. usually they live in trailers with no running water and listen to rush limbaugh at 90 decibels, stoned on oxycontin and natural lite while cooking meth in their microwave and their children are frolicking near the highway poking last nights roadkill with a stick.

somehow this larry guy made it to the mainstream with fart humor and a wobbly-box(trailer) attitude.

i just don't get it. i think he lowers the comedic value of the other three guys he toured with on the blue collar comedy tour.

That guy just slays me.

"I bought a cheese grater the other day. I'm going to change the name of it to.... sponge ruiner"

That's gold man. Especially with his inflection.

Not only did all his impressions sound the same but his jokes while in "character" were even worse. Fuck him and the horse he rode in and out on.

I probably will get flamed for this too.
I always thought he was overrated, amusing at best.
I grew up on the first cast of SNL too. I always thought his work was hackish and repetitive (Samurai bit and so forth).
If you think otherwise, I'd welcome some input.

I don't like to speak ill of the dead, but Jim Varney got more mileage out of one of the lamest commercials than anyone else in the history of entertainment.

88. Nobody mentioned Jonathan Winters???
Didn't like Bob Hope either, or Jerry Lewis (except he was great in "The King of Comedy").

Whereas I like Jack Benny and love Groucho Marx, so i guess it's not necessarily a generational thing.

Sam Kineson is probably funny if you're a guy. I never got him.
