There's nothing wrong with Alanis! I'm glad she's a citizen, although I'm a little puzzled as to why she would want to become a citizen at a time when so many Americans are trying to immigrate to Canada.

I was reminded yesterday how fiercely "You Oughta Know" rocks, and of how much I like her wordy style, with its odd emPHAses. That clinical touch is so effective on "Unsent"; by saying one thing, she conveys precisely the opposite meaning.

I dissed her, too, back in '95 or so, but that material grew on me. Her voice may not technically be great, but I like it fine.

This is great news.

Now if we can convince millions more of the Canadians to do the exact same thing we'll handily win the next election!

I really can't see any other reason as to why she'd want to become a citizen. She knows how fascist the U.S. is becoming, so I doubt she's doing it out of any sort of admiration. My guess, she just wants to vote in our next election. So I say, all right! Welcome to America!

She didn't give up her Canadian citizenship... If many of us Canadians in the U.S. had to pick one or the other, we wouldn't become citizens....

But having both is worthwhile... We pay taxes for many years here and without citizenship have NO say politically...

I thought you had to renounce your citizenship to other countries to become a citizen here in US.

I would like to know. My son is originally from Romania, and has Romanian/American citizenship NOW as a minor. The lady at the State Department told us he would have to choose when he turned 18. I would LOVE to have him keep the dual citizenship.
Any help?

It could be that there is a special deal with Canada. I know Canadian's can have more than one citizenship.

Losing U.S. Citizenship

A person who is automatically granted another citizenship (i.e.. through birth or marriage) does not risk losing U.S. citizenship. However, a person who acquires a foreign citizenship by applying for it may lose U.S. citizenship. In order to lose U.S. citizenship, the law requires that the person must apply for the foreign citizenship voluntarily, by free choice, and with the intention to give up U.S. citizenship. Intent can be shown by the person's statements or conduct.

Basically, the US considers all of its citizens to be citizens of the United States only. Any other citizenship that a person may hold from birth simply does not exist as far as the US is concerned.

Other countries do recognize dual citizenship. Canada, I believe, is one of those countries.

Therefore, if an American becomes a citizen of another country, the US either continues to consider the person to have remained an American citizen -- period -- or, alternatively, to have become an alien to the United States. The latter is very, very rare. It's actually quite difficult for a native-born American to become an official noncitizen. Citizens (and even legal resident noncitizens) are draftable and taxable. And our Murrica is a jealous god, bless it's heart. :)

I have in the past traveled out of the country for different reasons but I remember on a medical mission trip they warned us the U.S. was known for their embassies being less than helpful at times. They suggested using other passports or embassies if possible.
I would like my son to have that option.

And, I know this wasn't you - but calling her a horse because of physical attributes is just plain wrong.

Not that I have listened to a lot of it, but what I have I have thought was OK. I am more ambivalent about the whole notion of dual citizenship, though. I suppose it makes sense for professional reasons for her. I doubt she will ever support Bush, so Republicans shouldn't be too happy over this. Freepers will probably have a field day, running her down.
