"If you don't like the 10 Commandments you don't have to look at them."
I was actually told that today in my State & Local Govt. class today.

We were debating if the monuments should be removed from courthouse lawns (I was arguing for removal of course), and some dumb bitch told me "Well if you don't like them you don't have to look at them." I replied "It's funny that the religious right don't accept that argument when it comes to Howard Stern, strip clubs, and porno, but they expect us to accept it when it suits their purposes. Seems kinda hypocritical to me."

Needless to say she was oblivious to the irony of her argument, and continued to rant unphased. These fundies are impervious to any logic you throw at them.

1. I would've just said . . .
"And you don't have to look at that blank spot where they used to be before everyone realize that they were prohibited by the Constitution."

9. Reply: If you don't like gay people kissing then you don't
have to look at them.

Of course, most fundie wingnuts are obsessed with gay sex. Look at this:

http://www.petertatchell.net/homophobia/bigots%20are%20buggers.htm

Research by US psychologists suggests that 80 percent of men who are homophobic have secret homosexual feelings. This finding lends scientific support to the long-standing speculation that those who shout the loudest against homosexuality have something to hide.

'The research results were published in the prestigious Journal of Abnormal Psychology, with the backing of the American Psychological Association.

In tests conducted by Prof. Henry E Adams of the University of Georgia, homophobic men who said they were exclusively heterosexual were shown gay sex videos. Four out of five became sexually aroused by the homoerotic imagery, as recorded by a penile circumference measuring device - a plethysmograph.

Prof. Adams says his research shows that most homophobes "demonstrate significant sexual arousal to homosexual erotic stimuli", suggesting that homophobia is a form of "latent homosexuality where persons are either unaware of or deny their homosexual urges".'

and here:

http://www.psych.org/pnews/96-09-20/phobia.html

Now, I don't know if this is good science or a good study, but it certainly is interesting.

i'm skeptical of the validity. just because a guy might become aroused by gay porn doesn't neccessarily mean he's gay. but i don't know, so its definately an interesting thought

edit: now that i think about it, to have a device strapped around yourself might in itself cause...stuff (don't wanna get banned)

12. I agree ....
being aroused by gay porn doesn't make one gay... anymore than being aroused by straight porn makes one straight.

14. Very true. I can get aroused by lesbian porn but I'm not a lesbian.
I'm also not a homophobe--or lesbophobe (is that a word? if not, it should be.) I do tend to think a lot of homophobes do have homosexual tendencies, not all, but a lot.

16. As I said, I don't know how valid this is.
But the point, to me, is that this certainly stresses the fact that homophobic people could be fascinated by gay sex.

10. Great comeback! Too bad it was wasted on
a closed-minded, blissfully-ignorant, fearful-of-anything-that-makes-them-think fundie. Thanks for sharing it with us, though; we very much appreciated it!!!

... "yeah - if everyone spent as much energy trying to follow them as they do trying to shove them down everyone else's throat, the world would truly be a better place."

15. So she would be ok if you came to class nude? After all, she doesn't have
to look.

Or better yet, if you hung up nude pictures in place of the commandments?
