Poll question: Is It Time To Put 'The Simpsons' To Rest?
I mean, they've had a good run, but maybe it's time to end it while they still have some dignity left?

So it can continue the satire. I also want it to retain dignity, but I usually laugh at it even when it's at its worst.

Those who assert it's on a quality-slide may be right, and it's pretty much inarguable that the writing on "Futurama" was way sharper (bring it back... bring it back...), but "The Simpsons" is nonetheless still way better than most of what's on TV.

On edit: All that being said, I was mighty pissed off tonight when "Arrested Development" was pre-empted by a Simpsons "bonus" rerun. ARRRRRGGGGHHHH...!

7. May I ask you your age?
I've noticed that a good amount of the references in "Futurama" ("Family Guy" too, for that matter) are nicked from pop culture from the time when I was a really little kid, so I wonder if I'm sort of on the last cusp of people who'd get certain of those jokes. (I'm in my mid-'30s.)

You're in the range. It's the subjective nature of humor rearing its head, then. :hi:

What prompted this, in case you care, was when a 21 year old friend was over at my house for a TV party, and my friends closer to my age and I *howled* at a joke referencing a '70s advertisement, and he asked me point blank "Why in the name of fuck was that funny?" I felt old, of course.

10. For me, Futurama just doesn't hold up that well on multiple viewings
It's a good show, but once I've seen an episode, I just don't find it that funny upon repeated viewings.

Did you see tonight's episode about gay marriage in Springfield? HILARIOUS!

The show still has it, even after all these years. A bad Simpsons is still better than 98% of anything else on TV-- network or cable.

9. No, the show is on an upswing from the lows of seasons 11-14
While the show may not be as funny as it was the first eight or so seasons, it is now more of a biting satire than it ever was in the early days. This satirical aspect is what is rescuing the show and will hopefully enable it to stay on the air for at least a couple more seasons.

BTW, a limited season (10-15 shows per year) may be a good idea from here on out.

12. God yes.
It's lost its way from what it was in the first place. Now it's trying to keep up with the more frantic wackiness of Family Guy, and falling on its face doing so. It's pretty sad that what was once the best show on television has now been below quality for half of it's run.
