Please HELP- re: lost title to car- What to do???

My elderly Mom has rapidly become senile and we, as her family, are trying to put her affairs in order.

I would like to give the car to her tenant as a gift but, can't find the title. I am anxious to do this ASAP as I have discovered that she is still holding the insurance for the car and he is driving it daily!!!

Thanks for any advise you can offer!

4. Contact your state MVA...

They should be able to tell you how to proceed. When I went to sell my car several years ago, I discovered that the title was no where to be found. I had to go to the MVA with identification and they issued me a new title.

I'm not sure how it would work for you since the car is in your mother's name. But, they should be able to assist you.

5. As everyone else suggested, got to DMV

and request a copy. As power of attorney it is amazingly simple. And yeah, the sooner the better since he is driving.

6. go to where you get your drivers license

in your state with every document you can find on who owns the car and who as authority to handle your mothers affairs. do not let him drive the car! if there is an accident you may be sued and that will tie up your mothers estate for years.

How long does it typically to get a new title??

I'm feeling so overwhelmed that I am not thinking clearly at all!

Just got to work through this day-by-day.

9. About 7-10 days here (Illinois).

It's not a lengthy, complicated process, normally.

10. I noticed that you are from PA.

You can get your state representative to help you. They generally have a notary working at their local office. They can help you with the paperwork and will take care of getting it to the DMV.

We had to do this a couple of times over owners' cards. Our rep is Joe Petrarca, and his office was very helpful. It is probably one of the quickest ways to get the title.

Please consider doing this. Our reps are there to help us, and you already have enough on your plate right now.

12. All together now...DMV has a copy....

and your insurance company has a copy. I lost my car title original when I moved to another state. No problem. My new state was connected to all the state's DMV computers and bingo...I got me a copy.

13. When my mom died, my brother and I went in with a power of

attorney and death certificate and got a title to her car in our names within an hour. This was in Florida, 3 years ago. If you go in personally, it should be done right there.
