5. Like Laura Bush?
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 08:56 AM by Archae
No doubt it would.

But unless we hold democrats to the same standards we want to hold republicans to, our stands are worthless.

And Ted Kennedy let Mary Jo Kopechne drown in that car, while he ran home in a drunken state, and his family connections, (same as Bush's family connections got him out of trouble over and over,) got him off the hook.

6. There should have been further accountability.
I agree. It just always gets brought up in his case, but less-so in others it seems.

12. If it had happened in this time, there's no way he'd survive politically
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 09:52 AM by American Tragedy
I agree that he totally fucked up, but I'm inclined to feel that his legislative career has at least somewhat redeemed him. Maybe it's easier for me since I'm too young to remember Chappaquiddick, but I think you can embrace someone politically even if you don't fully admire them personally. Anyway, he seems to have straightened out sometime in the past fifteen or so years.

What pisses me off most about the Republicans is the larger context of their actions. If Bush had been a lousy no-good punk who woke up and developed a conscience and respect for human rights, I'd have no problem with him. I believe deeply in giving people a second chance, even people like George Wallace. Instead, he and his brethren were Born Again© as reactionary authoritarians the likes of which we've never seen.

And I've never attacked Bush's wife for her personal history - I think that's fairly irrelevant and it really embarrasses me when I see others on this site do so.
