3. Adobe Photoshop is wonderful
but the really scary evolutionary events are the viruses that evolve to attack new hosts (like chicken viruses that evolve to attack humans -- it's called "flu".

And the human genetic diseases that result from evolutionary changes in our DNA to protect us from risks that are no longer around -- sickle cell anemia (malaria), cystic fibrosis (Bubonic Plague), and diabetes (winter crop failure).

4. Please tell me more about the evolutionary changes
intended to protect against disease. I hadn't heard about this.

...sickle cell anemia (malaria), cystic fibrosis (Bubonic Plague), and diabetes (winter crop failure)...

Thanks.

5. Took an adult ed course in "Biochem and Evolution"
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 03:07 PM by Coastie for Truth
at a local med school (Stanford Univ) and we started out with bacteria developing antibiotic resistance. You subject a colony of bacteria to, say, penicillin, and 99% are killed. You subject the off-spring of the 1% who survived to penicillin, and only 98% are killed, etc. Ultimately you get to a penicillin resistant strain.

The link between sickle cell anemia and malaria is described in http://www.bambed.org/cgi/content/full/30/5/279

The theory with cystic fibrosis has to do with providing survival advantage from Bubonic Plague.

The whole "metabolic syndrome" has to do with inefficiencies in metabolism that in a hunter-gatherer society (where people died young), provided a survival advantage through cold, crop failure winters (before the degenerative effects of type 2 diabetes are detected).

There was a lot of good stuff in the class and he threw it at us fast.

(I wish we could still teach evolution in our Public Schools - sigh)

A good read (don't let the almost "comic book" format fool you - it is a good text), is David P. Clark and Lonnie D. Russell - "Molecular Biology Made Simple and Fun"
