10. I like the usual suspects as well as
Eastern European. In my little city of McKeesport, PA we have an International Village every summer for 3 nights. I love stuffed cabbage and really enjoy sampling the stuffed cabbage at each Eastern European booth, Slovak, Polish, Hungarian, Croatian, etc. as well as Haluski, Pierogi, Kolbassi, etc.

Also like the Greek booth for their lamb dishes, Baklava, honey balls, etc.

Plus all the desserts at all the booths.

Also like German food, Italian, Mexican, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, etc.

... but in each case when it's good it's really, really good - and when it's bad it's horrid.

I have "benchmark" meals I order when trying out a new restaurant.

For Mexican, I just get enchiladas. If you can't make them right, you probably can't make a decent chile relleno or carne asada :)

For Indian, it will be a vindaloo or curry.

For Chinese, the hot and sour soup is the test. Any place with good soup will probably have good food :)

I usually get beef curry or 9 vegetable curry when trying an Indian place for the first time.

Nachos are usually my Mexican "test dish", or chicken enchiladas

But my parents are Korean and I grew up eating rice, pulgogi, congnamul (soybeans), chopchae, and tofu (we call it "tubu" in Korean). And when I cook at home, I make a lot of rice and fish or Korean-style stir-fry with tons of soy sauce and sesame seed oil. Yummy!

I don't like all Korean foods, but I like a lot of them.

I used to like cabbage kimchi--there are about 20 different varieties of kimchi--but after catching non-gonorrheal urethritis from a bad batch of kimchi I tend to shy away from that variety.

The traditional way is to grill over an ondol briquet--a round hunk of charcoal six inches in diameter by six inches high with holes bored in it for better airflow that is used in your furnace.

53. How can I describe this without getting the thread locked?
I used to play fast and loose with my kimchi. You can get it at any restaurant in Korea--the Koreans live on this stuff--and it's so good when it's not been canned like you get it in the US.

Anyway, one Saturday I went to Munsan to take pictures, and around lunchtime I was a bit hungry so I stopped at a little eatery to have a quick bite. I got some kimchi, ramyon and tea.

On Tuesday, I woke up to find a really nasty discharge, kinda like a gonorrhea discharge. Gonorrhea isn't an airborne bacterium, so I knew it wasn't that especially since it didn't hurt when I peed, but I figured I better go get it checked out. Off to Room 2.

I'll spare you the description of getting checked for the clap.

The doctor explained to me that there's a lot of bad kimchi floating around the ROK. Koreans can eat it and it won't bother them because they've built up resistance to it, but Americans can't. "But how can you tell?" You can't, really, except by eating it and waiting for the drip to come on.

I'll take bean-sprout, cucumber and radish kimchi any day.

Diners self-serve at salad bar well stocked with veggies, rices, beanses, lol, pastas, hot mains, etc.

Servers move about the room with the skewers, slicing the meat onto your plate.

best part...ALL YOU CAN EAT !!

better still?...CHEAP !

Meat eaters Heaven.

76. Hawaiian food is not always served at tourist traps
there are a few plain old restaurants that serve it (one is in the food court at Ala Moana Center) as well as a number of "local style" places that serve a Hawaiian plate as a special on Fridays.

The menu: Kalua pig (pulled pork) and/or laulau (pork wrapped in taro leaves, with a chunk of fish thrown in), and of course poi (made properly, it is not sour or icky and can be grayish rather than purple, depending on the variety of taro used).

Your side dish is lomilomi salmon, small cubes of fish mixed with tomato, etc. Or, if you're lucky, there might be poke (POH-kay), raw fish marinated in a soy-based sauce (as served at Opihi's renowned DU lu'aus and available at all local supermarket fish counters). For dessert, a cube of haupia (coconut pudding) and a heaping side dish of aloha (no extra charge). 'Ono! (delicious)

79. That would be local food, not necessarily (native) Hawaiian
it is everywhere, even at McDonald's. One establishment uses Spam as a pizza topping.

And yet, even we must bow before the true kings and queens of Spam -- the people of Guam. The power tends to go out rather frequently out there, so canned meat fits their lifestyle nicely. They eat so much of the stuff that Hormel makes a special garlic Spam just for Guam (pop. 110,000).

For ethnicities not my own, I love Mexican, Thai and Indian.
