If a technician replaces the motherboard on my laptop
does that mean i won't be able to recover any of my data from the hard drive?

This is a follow up to this thread:

Of course, I was a dumbass and didn't back up my stuff. I will always make sure I do now!

1. If the Hard drive itself isn't damaged..
You should be able to use it again..

3. If the hard drive is functional, you shouldn't lose any data.
If it's only the motherboard, the hard drive should be fine.

BUT, if the thing fell as you mentioned in the other thread, you might have problems.

I lost a bunch of pics and e-mail recently because one of my older hard drives failed completely, so I know how that is.

BUT, you should be fine theoretically if all they need to do is replace the motherboard.

5. Actually it depends on your software
You can type and type and type in a spreadsheet or a word processing program and it will not be saved to your hard-drive until you hit "save". If the power goes out, or you drop your machine or it locks before you save it, kiss your Data/writing good-bye.
I found to my great pleasure after a very quick power outage, that my family history software is constantly saving data to the disk, basically every time I hit enter.
But your motherboard and your hard-drive are two different animals. They usually tell me that replacing a motherboard on a laptop is about as expensive as just getting a new laptop.
