anyone ever treated their cat for ringworm?
One of my kitties, who was a stray not too long ago (and who still romps around outside a lot, we're in a rural area) seems to have a skin problem. His fur is coming out in patches and he seems kinda itchy, and a little patch of skin around his groin is scaly (I just noticed this today). It could be almost anything, but I know cats are frequent carriers of ringworm.

Anyone familiar with the treatment?

1. Topical anti-fungal cream.
I haven't had a cat with ringworm but I've had it myself. Caught off a fomite at a livestock sale (probably). Not uncommon ailment of cattle.

2. A friend adopted 2 cats w/ ringworm.
She, of course, did not know it at the time. CAUTION: you can get ringworm from the cats. It takes months or even a year to get rid of the ringworm. Consult a vet immediately. Do not handle the animals without gloves. Good luck.

7. how long did you have to give kitty the pill?
weeks, a month? I read that some of the pills cause stomach upsets (vomiting or diarrhea) - did your kitty experience any of that?

Pretty thorough discussion of ringworm in cats, with photos.

My girl had it years ago and it cleared up easily with pills and cream.

8. Oh yeah--My kid and the cat both had it.
The vet swore the cat got it from her and the Doc swore she got it from the cat. Either way, I was out one doctor visit for the child, and the scrip for one tube of anti fungal cream.

The cat spent a couple of days with the vet where he got some kind of special bath, part of his fur shaved off, and some kind of flea treatment pill (I can't remember which one it was--but it is one that needs to be taken with fat, they said) that will also treat Ringworm.

Cat came home with an amazing bald patch, and some kind of anti fungal spray that we had to use on him twice a day. He just LOOOOVED that, too...

He developed a big old scab right in the middle of the shaved patch that was about the size of a quarter. That finally fell off.

A couple of weeks later, we took the cat back to the vet and the vet said, the hair would grow back and all would be well.

It cost me about $200 to cure the cat and about $100 to cure the kid...

One warning, if you DO bring the infected cat inside with your other cats, make sure you have that ringworm under control--it is an opportunistic fungus and it will spread to every cat in the house. I'd suggest isolation if you absolutely must.

Best of luck!

Laura
