3. My friend's dad took it and it sometimes
made him drool and slur his speech. Strong, scary stuff if you ask me.

4. They gave it to me years ago
for a nervous condition and it was horrible. I got tremors all over my body and could not sit still and went into horrible panic. I hate that drug. I've heard so many bad stories about awful side effects.

To this day if I fill out a medical or dentist form I put down NEVER to give me Haldol.

I hope your dad will be okay. Usually the side effects do go away.

7. Thanks for your response.
He has never really been the same since that happened. The drug gave him Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome. He had the same side effects as you and more. We also alert doctors never to give this drug to any one in our family because our brother was also given that drug and his turned into malignant catatonia. The only thing that saved his life was ECT treatments. It was not easy giving the consent for them to do.

15. I'm sorry to hear that.
I was fortunate in that I only had taken one dose and some how escaped permanant damage. I agree with the poster who said this drug should be illegal!

And I don't understand why your relatives shouldn't be able to sue for the awful damage down to their lives.

5. Actually, a doctor gave that to me one time to help me sleep (how stupid).
I had a major seizure from it. I do have epilepsy, but it had been under control and I was not experiencing seizures until I took that damn stuff.

Poison. Gak.

I hope your father is okay.

8. STAY AWAY FROM HALDOL!!!!!
That is one drug that should be against the law to take. My uncle was on it and it left him a total mess....he has what you call "ticks" where he has no control over his head, chest and face....it's like a tourettes syndrom...his speech is slurred....It's awful. Some of the drugs the doctors prescribe leaves side effects that are far worse than the illness they have. Any doctor who prescribes Haldol should be sued to the max.

16. That's one of the drugs they give to people with
tourettes syndrome. Supposedly in small dosages. The problem is, eventually a lot of these people will end up with something called retardia-disconesia. (I'm guessing the spelling of retardia-disconesia.) Basically the people taking Haldol will eventually drool, have facial numbness and have other nasty side effects that comes with r-d.

A very bad drug!

12. I'm wondering now if that's what killed my sister
She had downs syndrome and had never acted out before. She freaked one day saying she was dying and couldn't breathe. The ER gave her Haldol and sent her home. The home nurse refused to care for her saying she was in an emergency situation with labored breathing and slowing heartbeat due to the Haldol. Long story short, she was admitted to the hospital, found not breathing within a week and was trached. Three weeks later she was found dead but they resuscitated her(after 40 min) which left her in a coma and eventually brain dead. She died a few weeks later while still on the respirator.

One of the first things the Dr. did was call my Mom and I into a meeting and beg us not to sue them. The Chaplain even called my Mom and spoke to her about not suing them. (We never brought it up, they did, which made me automatically call a lawyer) One intensive care nurse told me my sister's medical records had been thinned out..
Autopsy showed nothing and the lawyer found nothing..

14. I am so sorry about your sister.
Did you know much about the drug at the time that she died? Also the home nurse was write, she should have stayed in the hospital and not been sent home. She should have been put in intensive care.

17. Thank you.
No, the only thing I knew was that there was a medication that was to be given with Haldol to take care of side effects like drooling, rigidness etc. This was back in '92.

When the ER sent her home, she was like a limp doll. She was very heavy, had thyroid problems too, and as the ambulance/medics were taking her off the gurney, they dropped her on the floor. She couldn't even stand or sit up.

Believe me, I've never trusted Dr.s or hospitals since then, with the exception of the home nurse, the intensive care nurse and one other nurse.

13. Yeah, they gave it to my dad after a bowel surgery
and then he started hallucinating ants on the walls. He was never the same after that and they kept trying to give him more and more drugs. None of them helped, they just made him more agitated.

And the bowel surgery was unnecessary, the path report showed no sign of the suspected tumor and the Mayo clinic (where he went afterward for another opinion) told him to just go home and forget about it.

Another reason why I have so little respect for the opinion of medical doctors.
