1. Not when I was growing up
I still wake up in the middle of the night screaming.

4. My best friend is a nun,
and she's not at all upset that I classify myself as basically an athiest. She also deplores the assholery in bunches like Operation Rescue, and at one time served on the board of the local AIDS support group. In addition, many nuns in this area are involved in the peace group, and they mean it. So while the old-school nuns were nothing particularly pleasant, currently they seem to be attracting women with social consciences. The old days of the ruler on the knuckles are gone I think.

6. Depends
The nuns in the town where I grew up were hella scary drivers: When you saw that old Jeep Cherokee coming toward you in the opposite lane, you hugged the shoulder as much as could.

However, once upon a time, becoming a nun was one of the few options for Catholic women who wanted an education and didn't want to be a baby-making machine. A friend's aunt has been a nun since the 1960s and is one of the best people I know. She's a department dean at a Catholic university. When my friend realized he was gay, his aunt was the first family member in whom he confided. And at a family Easter dinner, when her fundamentalist nephew-in-law was spewing forth Repuke talking points about how glorious the war in Iraq was, it was Aunt B. who asked him if he was so excited about the war, when was he going to be signing up.
