What the hell is up with my dog, Stella?
She waits down the hall while I get her breakfast ready-dry food and canned food. She comes when I call her, wagging her tail, smiling, looking up at me with her head in that dipped-down 'I did something naughty' position (she didn't though) then I tell her "OK. Go. Good Dog. Now. Sweet. Eat. Go Ahead" I am trying to find that MAGIC WORD. "Please."

After all that and I am no where near her food, she grabs a chunk, runs down the hall with it and eats it there. She repeats for as many chunks I managed to cut her food into.

Now if we take a walk first, she heads straight for the bowl and eats from there, no probs.

Anyone know WTF she's doing here? I won't yell at her for the food thing-I want her to be relaxed and comfy when she's eating-but I've never seen this done repeatedly by a dog.

1. "Hey Stellaaaaaaaaaa!!"
Edited on Wed Feb-23-05 11:54 AM by Richardo

First of all: What a cutie!!

Is there another dog in the house? Our littlest ones often take the food, one kibble at a time, and go eat it elsewhere - I think to get away from the bigger dogs that might take it from them, or who are blocking the bowls. (We try to put out enough bowls for everyone.)

5. No other dogs
but she was a street dog-owned by a homeless kid who left town I've been told by a couple of people. I find it hard to believe sometimes, she's SO good in the house.

10. We have a dog that was a 'street dog', too
She is VERY territorial about her food. I'm sure she barely got enought to eat as a puppy. She's 13 now and still jealously guards her food.

11. Love that pic, Richardo.
My sister is named Ellen, but we've called her Stella for years, because of that picture. When we go to her house, we don't knock. We stand outside her door and scream "Stellaaaaaaaa!!! (It's good that her neighbors don't care.)

Like the new avatar - what is it? :hi:

13. I always like the 'Streetcar' references - there are SO many.
I can't remember where I got that avatar, but it's just a piece of clip art.

As a matter of fact I was trying to upload that pic of the little friar doll after you and CatWoman's 'fight' the other day. :) But it kept coming out all squishy. So I put this one up instead, which for some reason was in my Pics file

Probably more than you wanted to know ;-)

14. I have this neighbour, an older Russian woman
who yells STELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLA! now sometimes when she sees us-enough times to be funny, not obnoxious. and well while my dog is called 'Stella,' she has often been dependent on the kindness of strangers...

2. My dog does the same.
My Boxer, Brando, takes his first several bites of food several feet away from his bowl to eat them, then finishes the rest at the bowl.
The vet says this is an instinct thing, from dogs eating in packs and making sure "they get their share".

16. We named him Brando
because he happened to be born the day Marlon Brando died.
His AKC name is Hollywood Toughguy Brando. The sires name is Tough Guy.

I didn't even catch the coincidence about Stella and Brando until after my post!!

18. They are awesome dogs.
Very affectionate. If you want a dog that truly is a good friend, a boxer is the one. They don't leave your side unless they are eating or sleeping.

3. My name isn't Stella
As for your dog, it sounds like she loves you and wants to interact with you.

4. My cat, Pooky, does the same thing...
He absolutely disdains taking anything from my hand, even though he stands over me while I eat. If, however, I put something on the edge of the plate and pretend not to watch, he grabs it and runs halfway across the room to munch it. He then returns, hoping for more (which he usually gets). I tend to think that it is typical predator behavior to grab a piece of the kill and run away to a 'safe' distance with it, to avoid having it stolen by another predator. As far as the walk prior to feeding Stella and the effect it has, I am clueless. Perhaps the walk satisfies her need for walking/running and she is too tired to snatch and run?

12. My last cat Mr Big would trot big chunks down the hall
and even though it's only a couple feet, he needed all the excercise he could get. I think after our walks, she's so hungry, the game isn't that important...

7. So feed her after you take her for a walk.
2 of my dogs don't like to stand on the cold floor and eat. Lil Winky likes to eating while reclining on a pillow, ala Ceasar.

The new puppy Lola likes to grab a kibble and run around the house and THEN find the perfect place to eat it and leave crumbs all over.

The other two have their own food dramas and I have to move their bowls all over the house all day long.
