Why do Americans care so much about the British royal family?
Honestly, what's so intriguing?

1. It's like a soap opera?
I don't know. When I was a kid, Prince Charles and Diana got married and my mom, who was OBSESSED with the royal family, got our asses out of bed at 4 am to see it.

My brother promptly fell asleep on the couch, but I was mesmerized.

Now, not so much. They're just people, they just have had the accident or fate of being born into that family. Nothing less, nothing more.

4. Because it will affect the US
There is a republican movement in the UK. They want to get rid of the royal family and have been working to that end for years.

Charles is a perfect target for them. Almost heaven-sent.

Hence all the ridicule, and highlighting of royal gaffes.

The UK is hesitant about joining the EU...currently America's nemisis with their Euro.

One of the major stumbling blocks is the royal family.

Would Brussels rule the Queen of England?

Would the Brits stand for Poland ordering the royal family about?

So...to join the EU...the royal family has got to go.

And if the UK becomes a republic and joins the EU...which is already increasing in size and influence by leaps and bounds....and isn't interested in helping out the US on anything....

So it affects the US.

Beyond that, they are public figures...celebrities...and naturally generate interest. As do the lives of Hollywood stars and so on.

5. I think the vast amount of your argument flies way over the heads of
almost anyone obsessed with the royal family.

I'll add to your last part of the argument though - I'm not sure why we care so damn much about celebrities either.

13. Well maybe
Americans miss a monarchy somehow. People have an amazing compulsion to be ruled, and they prefer strong leaders...'damn the torpedoes full speed ahead' sort of thing. And the royal family is more permanent than passing politicians.

A monarchy has provided stable, peaceful, 'continuity' governing in many countries...UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and so on.

People also like watching the lives of others. It's the basis of entertainment, even when we know they're actors on TV.

Although 'reality TV' has taken this to new depths. :D

6. I'm an American
who has never cared a thing about the Royal Family. I have nothing against them or anything; just never took an interest in what happened.

Of course, I also never cared about a lot of the things most Americans care about, from the show "Friends" to the NFL to the Michael Jackson "scandal" to... well, you get the point.

Not that I don't care about plenty of things; just not necessarily the same things most Americans care about.

8. I get the point - I'm an American too.
I phrase it that way because I can sort of understand why the Brits would love the royal family, but I'm not sure why Americans obsess over them.

7. The royal family
Has the best welfare gig going. They have managed to convince their public to financially support the whole lot of them. I guess we watch 'cause we want to know how they do it. Sheesh, in this country many of us would label them "welfare queens", which is what they are.

9. They're about 10,000 times more likable than the Bush family.
I'll take the dysfunctionality of the Windsors over the assholes we're stuck with in this country.

12. Because they wish we were a monarchy and ...
had an archaic class system just like the Brits. Why wouldn't they care so much?

14. Same reason they care about soap operas,
only this is a living soap opera, which makes it even more interesting.
