Low Oscar Ratings? Blame Rock, Say Conservative Family Groups

Chris Rock has been trying out material at comedy clubs that he is likely to use during his Oscar monologue on Sunday, including jibes at President Bush, L.A. Weekly columnist Nikki Finke reported. She said that a condition of Rock's acceptance of the offer to host the Oscars was that he be granted creative control over his material and agreed only to excise swear words. Rock, she observed, is keenly aware that he'll be blamed if the Oscar telecast fails to attract its usual massive audience, even though none of the films up for best picture has achieved blockbuster status. (The conservative group Concerned Women for America has already predicted that Rock's presence at the podium will drive away viewers and that it demonstrates "how far out of touch is with the rest of America.")

1. Since they already know that the show's ratings have been declining
they have a ready made answer for why. Not likely! As far as popularity Rock is practically untouchable.

2. I think Rock's presence will have the opposite effect.
I think that a whole lot of people will tune in just for Chris Rock, because...well...he rocks.

4. Especially since there isn't any "Lord of the Rings"/"Titanic" type...

11. That's the case for me.
I don't really care much for the Oscars, however I love Chris rock and I'd watch it just because of him. The fundies can go fuck themselves.

3. I'm not a Rock fan
but if he's going to poke fun at *, I'll watch just to keep the ratings up (not that I'm a Neilsen family or anything ;-))

7. I had a fundie boss who gave everyone a letter on the Oscars and...
their "golden idol"

I have looked all over the web for it but to date no luck.

The letter was this ridiculous garbage about how once a year the Hollywood cult has its annual religous high holiday to worship their golden idol the Oscar.

That was the jist of it. There were all kinds of Repubs coming in and out of the office and lots of "Promise keepers" golf shirts. This was back in '99.

15. I guess so
To me this was the first introduction into the deeply involved HIGHLY funded far right wing world. The piece he copied and had put in everyone's in-box was a page long diatribe about Godless Hollywood.

8. Why are they concerned about a "liberal Holywood" awards show?
Why can't these Concerned Women for America just STFU?

10. Fuck the Oscars
How's that
And as stated above, why the hell do the Concerned Women for America give a shit about those pinko, commie hollyweird libruls? I think these conservative groups aren't happy unless they can whine about something.
As for the Oscars, I could give a crap if they have them or not. There are more important and interesting things to think about than friggin' movies.

13. Is this the women's group that has a man as its spokesperson?
Whatever.

Hollywood hardly cares what these people say.

14. Concerned Women's male spokesman....
(as Jon Stewart recently quizzically noted) had this to say:

How much more evidence does Hollywood need? Americans made a loud statement during the election that Hollywood does not speak for them. The Super Bowl seemed to have gotten the message this year. But by choosing Chris Rock to host the Oscars, Hollywood is underlining that gap between Hollywood and the rest of America with a big, red pen,” (Robert) Knight said. “Make that a big, blue pen.”

www.cwfa.org/articledisplay.asp?id=7455&department=MEDIA&categoryid=family

The CWFA was founded to fight the Equal Rights Amendment, by Beverly LaHaye, wife of Tim--co-author of the "Left Behind" series. They're both alumni of Bob Jones University. Her website is a good source for the stories that show up in letters to editors & gullible media sources. ("Why can't we say Merry Christmas" was a recent big hit.)

Guess I'll have the Oscars on this Sunday, even if I don't pay full attention.
