My quandary, for musical DUers (especially near Boston)
I have this urge to put together a shameless tribute band for '60s psychedelia.

There are a number of points arguing against it. (1) Anybody else old enough to remember that stuff when it was current is probably too old, or too encumbered by kids and whatnot, to rock out. (2) Anybody who isn't old enough, but feels a real kinship to that sort of music anyway, should be watched for substance abuse issues. (3) Anybody who isn't in either category probably isn't going to play it properly-- I want enthusiastic amateurs rather than professionals who are just phoning it in. (4) I dunno if this sort of thing even has an audience, or a market niche. (5) I dunno if I have the time or energy to do it properly.

In its favor, it would scratch an itch I've had for decades.

And I'd want to do it properly, with light shows and all. And I want to take chances with it. I'd rather play "Dark Star" than "Truckin'."

What do you think: is it worth doing? If you're convenient to Boston, would you come see such a thing? If you play, would you want to play in this band?

3. Awesome
Part of my rationale for doing this is to try to figure out what the Jefferson Airplane were doing-- trying to understand how it worked by copying the arrangements. The Airplane were my favorite band in the whole wide world between the time I got Surrealistic Pillow and when Marty left the band (and coincidentally I discovered Jethro Tull).

And I was rehearsing "White Rabbit" last night. (And a bunch of Byrds songs.)

7. Blue Oyster Cult r00lz
But I think they're gonna be outside the scope of this endeavor. The psychedelic era was really over when they got started-- their first album even has a song about Altamont ("Transmaniacon MC").

Might do some early Alice Cooper though.

4. Would you throw in some fun things, like Strawberry Alarm Clock?
Or that Kenny Rogers song on the Big Lebowski soundtrack...."What Condition My Condition Was In"....I think that's the title?

Sounds like a great idea and I wish I lived near Boston to come hear it.

8. That's a good song
Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. (Shoulda been a one-hit wonder, so we wouldn't have had to deal with his later stuff.)

9. Don't know them
I'll have to ask my obscure records expert.

Another issue I have to settle is, how deeply to get into heavy duty obscurantism of the can-you-top-this sort. I'm looking more for a certain attitude of drug-inspired experimentalism than Brownie points from Lenny Kaye or (the late) Greg Shaw. So I might want to do a Thirteenth Floor Elevators song, but more because it speaks to the tune-in-turn-on-drop-out sensibility than that Roky Erickson is a cult hero.

11. Interesting idea.
But I'm not certain if there would be enough interest in it. I'll have to think about that. But I do know that I'd come see you in a project like this. Help you with publicizing a gig, too. :hi:
