Why are "remakes" called "covers"? I'm an old guy. I have noticed this terminology within the last few years. Whatever happened to just calling them "remakes"?
During the fifties music on radio was segregated. R&B (originally called "race" music) was not played on white stations. In order to cash in on the new adventurous music, white artists were used to "cover" songs made by black performers. Examples:
Theresa Brewer recorded "Tweedle Dee" (a little cleaned up from original) by LaVern Baker. Pat Boone did Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti." Bobby Vinton decimated "Blue Velvet" by (IIRC) The Chords. and "Little Darlin'" by the Diamonds was originally recorded by The Gladiolas. Funny that we never hear about those black artists.
Keith Emerson and The Nice: Dylan's My Back Pages Transatlantic: Procol Harum's In Held Twas In I Most of Led Zeppelin I and II, and of course much of the English blues that came out at the same time. Clash: I Fought The Law Chicago: Spencer Davis' I'm A Man Nirvana: Where Did You Sleep Last Night (since the Meat Puppets appeared on "Lake of Fire", it doesn't count) Blue Cheer: "Summertime Blues" Santana: "Black Magic Woman" Bangles: "Hazy Shade of Winter" Ant Trip Farm: "Hey Joe" Foo Fighters: Baker Street
Bonerama is a trombone based band from New Orleans and they do a phat cover of war pigs.
There is this great band from Chicago called Mr. Blotto and every year at their homegrown music festival called "Blottopia" they close the last set by covering an entire album. I think last year they covered The Who's "Who's Next" album and it was tremendous.
You can download entire shows by Mr. Blotto and many other bands who allow copyright free recordings of their music to be posted online at the Live Music Archive.
When the singer just kind of breaks into a Jerry Lewis mumbling kinda delivery when he forgets the words?!
