2. I voted for Billy Wilder
just one of the greatest directors ever. "The Lost Weekend" isn't one of my favorites. As usual with Oscar some really Oscar worthy films are often overlooked: "Double Indemnity", "Sunset Blvd", "Sabrina", "Some Like it Hot", but I think "The Apartment" was certainly worthy.

4. 'Went with Milos after standing in Central Park years back --
-- and watching and listening to him direct HAIR.

AMADEUS was a diamond of a film.

I wish Hollywood would be a bit more generous to Robert Altman. I love his combined work.

8. Wilder after making The Seven Year Itch and Some It Like Hot:
Edited on Sun Feb-27-05 10:38 PM by Jack Rabbit
"I'm the only director to work with Monroe twice. I think the Directors' Guild should give me a purple heart."

At the premiere of Sunset Boulevard, Wilder came out of the theatre to a crowd gathered around Louis B. Mayer, the most powerful movie mogul in Hollywood. Mayer was upset at Wilder for making the film he had just seen. He was ranting about how Mayer was ungrateful to Hollywood and had bitten the hand that feeds him, etc., etc. Wilder, a slightly built man with a cherubic face, calmly stared at Mayer and said, barely audible enough for those gathered to hear: "L. B., fuck you."

6. Man, Those Are Tough Choices!
I had to go with Billy Wilder in this case, though. 'The Lost Weekend' was great, and 'The Apartment' is one of my all-time favorite movies.

7. Billy Wilder. But those weren't his best films
In the year that the turkey Ben Hur inexplicably won eleven Oscars, Wilder made the film that stands out best from that year, Some Like It Hot.

If you don't believe me, go see it. Treat yourself.

I like The Apartment better than The Lost Weekend. However, the film that stands out best from that year was Psycho, which wasn't nominated.

9. Bump
Hey, the director (the more proper word is filmmaker) is the true artist.

Let's give him credit.

That's one of the reasons why Oscar never seems to get it right. The big prize goes to the producer. Do you know who the producer is? He's the bloody idiot who doesn't do anything more than sign the checks and pretends the whole idea was his.
