HELP. I'm trying to set up Thunderbird

and it wants to know my incoming and outgoing server for my e-mail. How does one determine that? I am one of those "computers are useful tools" people who has never been interested in the mechanics- I'm at a loss.

I would use:

smtp.cmc.net or
mailhost.cmc.net

Yours will be different. I hope you see the connection.
