Cat question: What is the normal number of times a cat should pee per day?
One of my cats is drinking more and peeing more frequently. He pees a small amount four times a day. I hope this isn't a sign of a UTI. Does anyone have any info?

Thank you.
Kathy

1. If you notice it's more frequent than before, there may be a problem
In my Crazy Cat Lady experience, females tend to urinate more than males. That's just what I've noticed. The one thing I know for sure is that a UTI in a male cat is much more serious than in a female. I think you should call your vet tomorrow, just to be on the safe side.

5. Thanks-he's my black male kitty

He seems his normal vocal obnoxious self, but I'll call the vet.

and Reno's pictures don't do him justice. He is a very handsome 'manly' kitty, with the macho attitude to boot! He is a sweetie too! How many kitties do you have?

20. I have three now
Their pics are in the DU gallery, along with Tiffany, who passed away last July.

I also have a bird named Buster, who rules the whole place (the cats are terrified of him).

Reno does have that tough guy look. I like him. :D

29. We have a 12 yr old yellow Lab and had mated love birds.
The little parrots were terrorists. The female shredded our books for nests and laid three clutches in the junk drawer! I couldn't believe it until I heard the cheeping! And damn Grace was great at hatching but not so good at feeding. So, I had to feed those little Kung Pao Chicken-looking things until they could eat on their own.

Have you ever watched birds learn to fly? First they try walking on air to follow the momma, but that doesn't work very well.

The day the the whole first clutch learned to fly, they flew straight to a window, attracting an admiring audience of every outdoor kitty in the hood.

But, the thing is, George, the male, used to ride the dog like a hairy surf board. And my poor gentle Buddy just tried to smile and not mind too much. George and Grace went to a friend with an aviary. They needed more room -- and a bigger library.

11. ROFL! I love it!
Have you ever had them leave cat toys in your suitcase as you're packing? Worse, have you ever not noticed it until you get to your destination? :D

Yes, I once unpacked a really grody catnip mouse in Madrid. :D

17. No, no surprises. Just mouse butts on the porch.
And some days, if I had any more cat hair on me, I'd be Animal Control bait :)

27. I think the "rests" were, ah, snacks.
It makes me feel happy to be included, though.

roflmao

My mom goes into hysterics when she is "gifted".

When I visit her on the ranch, I can hear her screaming all the way down to the hollow where my little place is. I go running up there, and it's just a little tiny field mouse butt! No gun or anything.

22. You made me cry
My cat "daughter" did that once. I remember how delighted I was. She lived to be 21; died 2 years ago, and I still grieve and always will. Thanks for bringing back a displaced memory.

24. I'm sorry about your fur baby
That was my late, beloved Tiffany who did that, I'm sure. You can still see her pic in the DU gallery, but she sadly passed away last July.

A beautiful cat - even more so on the inside than on the out. :)

30. Thanks
Another sweet memory: I was a grad student, proverbally drinking from the fire hydrant of intense university life every day, when she came into my life. She LOVED to play. She wanted my attention so badly, and she was so naturally intelligent, that just to keep my attention, she learned to fetch like a circus cat. She loved to play fetch so much, and I adored her so, that i could play fetch all night, pitching in a few seconds of consciousness when trying to sleep. When I was too exhausted, i would hide her little foil ball toys on top of the moldings of the doors. When I moved out of the apartment when i graduated, when cleaning, i found dozens of these little toys.

Boo hoo hoo I am crying again.

My little 5 pound Song was such a momma lion, dogs used to freeze in their tracks and turn around, go the other way. I have witnesses!

For such a little thing, she cast a long shadow. Once, our neighbor bully cat must have crossed some line because I came home from school (I was a grad, too) and there was Song backing this 15 lb cat off the roof!

Nobody got hurt.

I don't have pictures of her. Maybe that's why I have shots of everbody else just breathing. Okay, I'm going to start crying now.

2. as long as he IS peeing when he wants to...
...he's likely ok. If you see him TRYING to pee, but not succeeding, or if he stops peeing, or dramatically cuts back on food and water, get him to the vet fast.

3. You should take him to the vet
'cause cats can get diabetis, or (I hate to say) it could be a kidney problem. If he's crying when he pees, get him to the vet IMMEDIATELY! That could be a blockage that will be fatal.

13. It could just be an infection too
but if you love your kitties like I love my kitties, then you'll take him anyway. It makes sense that if he's drinking more, then he'll pee more, but you have to find out why he's drinking so much.

4. When my hubby did that, it was diabetes. Trying to think
UTI would actually be a good and not to expensive/hard to fix guess.

Have you changed anything lately? Diet? Water?

14. I've had him for almost two years, and we assume he's 9
he is VERY energetic and frisky, and yammers constantly. He is maybe a little more agitated than usual, but we're having a storm with high winds tonight.

Do you have FIVE cats? I counted the # in your pic.

When I was assistant to the MOST VALUABLE CAT LADY in L.A. County, I had a two cat limit. And we fostered maybe 200 cats n kits that year. Well, you know how things go. One was too ugly to be adopted, so, she stayed. Another one was just too nuts. So she stayed. This other one showed up. She lived in my shirt for a week or so to keep her temp up and while she learned how to eat. What, I was supposed to give her up? lol

On the day we were moving, we couldn't place the twins, so they stayed.

But NO MORE! I'm tired of being pushed around! :silly:

15. My cat was about 14 when he started drinking all the time.
He also ate much less, and started to get skinny. It was the beginning of the end for him. He had developed kidney disease. We tried special canned food, pills, everything short of the dialysis they recommended. I was even feeding him tuna right from the can at the end and when he stopped eating that, I knew his time was getting close. Hope yours is nothing serious.

18. Sounds normal
Peeing 4 times a day sounds pretty normal. I'm presuming it's an amount proportional to a cat, and that you are not expecting him to pee like a race horse :-)

If he is being a good boy and going in his box, and there is no unusual odor, and he does not appear to strain or experience discomfort, and you don't notice any real change in his pee pee habits -- I'd hold off on worrying.

For your own peace of mind, you might want to keep him on a regular diet and not give him any "suspicious" foods -- although it doesn't sound like you're feeding him anything too weird, to be perfectly honest. High quality kitty food is best, but small bits of not too weird stuff isn't going to be harmful.

You might want to more closely monitor his fluid and food intake -- compare input to output -- and if you still feel there are discrepencies, or other symptoms appear, as listed above, then call your vet.

26. Hey, Kathy.
Proud cat-mom to three beautiful beasts!

My cats drink a lot more during the winter. I've moved a lot, and noticed that they drank more when we lived in forced air/gas heat. Check the moisture level in your home. Are you running a humidifier? Since my last move, I'm in a hot-water heated home. It's not nearly as dry, and the cats have fewer "dandruff" issues, too.

I refill their drinking cups several times a day, because they only want COLD water. Yup, they got me trained well.
